KUWAIT, March 20 (Reuters) - U.S.-led forces fired back after Iraqi artillery opened fire on the Iraq-Kuwait border on Thursday, a Kuwait defence official said.
"There was an exchange of artillery fire earlier in the morning. The Iraqis fired over the border. The coalition replied and put a stop to it," the official said.
He said the exchange took place in the area of Kuwait's Rutqa oilfield, just west of the main Kuwait-Basra highway. Rutqa was cloosed a few weeks ago by the Kuwaitis as a precaution.
Earlier, around two dozen explosions, apparently mortars, were heard from inside Iraq close to the border with Kuwait.
The Kuwaiti official did not specify whether the exchange he was referring to was mortar fire or heavy guns. ((Reporting by William Maclean;

Artillery... these guys are no Einsteins. Our radar picks up their location right away (we can detect howitzer shells in flight, right?), and we've got precision weapons heading straight for them before their shells even hit the ground.

Sock it to Saddam! He needs all of his communications cut,
and this old boy needs to know that the USA means business.
The UN has played games with him for so long, that he doubts that anyone means business.
