This morning they're saying they're still not sure, because they think he's been making tapes prior to this in order to be able to play them in case of Command/control problems.

Apparently (as I heard on the radio) voice comparison takes time. Still won't prove whether it was LIVE or not though.

I just read you post about flleing Iraq in 40 minutes AFTER I posted it. I guess we do all think alike,

It is amazing how long it takes to catch up on these threads! It's like IRC with a huge lag time! :-)

Morning all. Driving to the office there were a handful of anti-war dopes carrying signs that said Bush was breaking international law. I called out my window, "liberate Iraq, liberate Iraq," they didn't like that so much:)

GOOD FOR YOU!! hehe

Wonderful to hear hans blix, bambi's uncle, stating for all the world to hear that 'if Saddam uses WMD that world opinion would turn against him (Saddam)... lol

Ya mean world opinion was PRO Saddam?

What planet is Blix on?

He was whining yesterday that he didn't have enough time....

Hey Blix...ya backtracking? Are ya in full CYA mode? LOL Good.

>>>You cannot tap a fiber optic the way you tap a phone line without breaking the line, which would defeat the entire purpose.<<<

Your statement presumes that all FO communications is point-to-point, which is not true. Several companies market optic and or electro/optic junctions where signals can be split and re-routed according to destination.

In this case it would be something like installing a splitter in your TV line. I'm sure that its tricky to do without losing signal for a period of time at either end, but maybe the Iraqi aren't that smart - after all, didn't the Chinese install the FO lines for them?

And apparently, the CIA has been tapping fiber optic cables in Baghdad, listening in on telephone conversations in efforts to track down Saddam. Most people think fiber can't be tapped, but here's how to do it (I wrote about this at least 10 years ago). Strip the plastic casing off a couple inches of the fiber bundle, being careful not to damage the glass. Bend the fiber back on itself in a very tight loop. At that place where the bend in the fiber is sharpest, the internal reflective ability of the fiber is compromised enough for a little light to leak out (called "conductive emission" in the spy biz). That's where you put your detector. This is remarkably easy to do, yet we think of fiber as being totally secure.

Amazing. I agree that even the smallest amount of light leaking out would make the message detectable. I just didn't know it was possible to detect without interrupting the connection.
