White Powder Scare In Downtown Seattle

POSTED: 12:10 p.m. PST March 19, 2003
UPDATED: 1:16 p.m. PST March 19, 2003

SEATTLE -- A hazardous material scare in downtown Seattle is over.

Fire department spokeswoman Sue Stangl says a suspicious powder is not hazardous.

Police spokesman Scott Moss says an officer saw a man sprinkling orange dust as he crossed Fourth Avenue.

Police arrested the man and called in the fire department HazMat team before noon.

Downtown streets near Fourth and Pike were closed for about an hour while the team investigated.

On Monday, police and firefighters responded to reports of an unidentified white powder at seven different locations around the city -- six of them in West Seattle -- causing the evacuation of dozens from a post office at one site.

All of the instances on Monday were determined to be hoaxes or false Alarms, fire officials said.

I'm sure it was some Maoist protestor trying to be cute.

I hope he enjoys the lockdown.

Anyone who fakes a terror attack at a time like this should certainly be prosecuted. It distracts law enforcement from the real threats.
