US, Backers Responsible Before God on Iraq - Vatican

March 18

— VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - The Vatican said Tuesday that countries which decided to wage war on Iraq without the consensus of the international community were assuming great responsibility before God and history.

"Those who decide that all peaceful means that international law makes available are exhausted assume a grave responsibility before God, their conscience and history," said Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls.

Navarro-Valls comment was the Vatican's first official reaction to Washington's ultimatum to Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to go into exile within 48 hours or face war.

NO statement by the RCC is better than the one they made. Wonder if the Church looked at pictures like the ones at the top of the thread before being making such trite statements.

Those who decide that all peaceful means that international law makes available are exhausted assume a grave responsibility before God, their conscience and history

And what about those who do everything in their power to circle the wagons around and protect a heinous, evil tyrant such as Saddam Hussein? Those who wish to condemn his people to continued torture and tyranny? Those who wish to leave the whole world unprotected from weapons of mass destruction? Do they also assume a grave responsibility before God for their actions?

And what about those who are supposed to speak on behalf of God and guide the flock, yet show themselves to be worthless shepherds by making common cause with the wolves? Do THEY also assume a grave responsibility before God?

I am as religious as anyone can be, and attacks upon the Church by leftists make me livid. But the Vatican's insistence in condemning the policeman for trying to do his job instead of the criminal for committing his crimes is simply too much for me to stomach any longer. When the words that come from the Pope are the same that come out of the mouths of socialist supporters of evil, I must come to the conclusion that the Vatican's moral compass has become as upside down as theirs.

We are truly in End Times, when the Vatican and the UN speak with the same voice, when the Vatican views the UN as the sole arbiter of the legitimacy of this war, and when the Vatican worries more about good men confronting evil than about evil men carrying out their evil designs. The Vatican insists that we submit to the will of the UN, and in so doing insists that we allow ourselves to be branded with the number 666. It comes as no surprise that Satan attempts to sit on God's throne as if he WERE God, but for the Vatican to invite him to sit there shows how great The Great Apostasy has become.

Worthless shepherds. They have utterly failed to guide the flock, and have become as irrelevant as the UN. May the sheep keep their eyes on the true Shepherd, lest they become lost.

Raped chldren? Murdered children? No problem to some, apparently.

There's a difference between condoning Saddam's atrocities and believing that all means of avoiding war peacefully have yet to be exhausted.

Personally, I believe all peaceful means have been exhausted. It's a judgement call.

YOu must have the courage to face the fact that you are completely lacking in common sense.

blindness due to dogma is still blindness - still 500/500.

You are 100% correct....the Vatican has LOST much of its' moral authority because of its' deceptive handling of this matter.

You can only condemn or people who aren't in the German/French/Vatican Axis of Weasels.

(Thwacking myself on the forehead!) Oh, I forgot. And you did hear my teeth grind when the Pope and his minions talk about this breaching the relationship between Christians and Moslems, forgetting (or neglecting) the fact that Saddam and the rest of the Islamic world want to kill off a few million Jews....and that people in the US are not that fond of radical Muslims since 9/11.

Actually, when I read the word "Vatican" I do not automatically think that the Holy Father signed off on this statement.

I think there are a bunch of lefties in the Vatican issuing whatever pronouncements they wish...

I am sure there are atrocities committed in Iraq that Saddam has no personal knowledge of either. He is still accountable for such atrocities.

All we hear from the Church is silence in the face of evil.

Now I see why the Church was criticized for it's silence against the action of Hitler and his Nazis. Not to mention the molested little boys.

Yes. I agree. As we are all responsible before God, may He have mercy on us, and bless us all, most especially today, our President and our troops, and grant them swift victory.

Where WAS the Church when Saddam murdered all those Kurds? Interesting they can only condemn the US when we must take action. I don't think they loudly condemned the Muslims for 9-11 either.

We'll send the Pope to Hussein's rape rooms. See how he likes it.

Unless my memory has failed me, didn't the Pope support the bombing of the Serbs while the UN was circumvented? Could it be that the Pope is trying some sort of rapproachment with Islam at the expense of Christians? Don't know the answer. All I know is the US has not and I suspect will not attack peaceful muslim nations nor does the US discourage the religion. This is about Saddam.

The Catholic bashing on this thread is repulsive. The Pope is simply saying that we have a responsibility to avoid killing of innocents in Iraq to the extent we can.

I'm a mass attending Catholic ---but I the Pope isn't infallible on politcal matters. Catholics are not being bashed here, I don't feel bashed but the hierarchy might be getting bashed and sometimes they need to be. The US will avoid killing innocents in Iraq ---I'm quite certain of that.

without the consensus of the international community

And I don't care if the Pope himself says we must have one big global government, I cannot support him on that. Are you saying we must now be dictated by the UN because someone in the Church says so? What is "international community"? I'm not part of it.

It appears the Vatican is as realistic as the UN.
