can this be verified?If you want to do the research, I'm sure this would be easy to verify. I've heard statistics that funding for AIDS is close to that for heart disease....even though AIDS affects potentially less than 5% of society...and heart disease something like 25% (or more).
It really is ridiculous spending these kind of resources on a voluntary behaviorally related disorder.

Yes, it is a bit ridiculous -- however realize that most AIDs research has been "basic" research. In which case it is a good thing because it has been generalized research into the immune system, viruses in general, cellular operations, etc. What really happened is that scientists realized that they could stamp "AIDs related" onto their grant proposals and so get funding. Another thing on this -- basic research is so far away from producing discoveries that pay off, corporations put very little money into it. Yet basic research is where the work is done that leads to the money making discoveries.
