Turkish brothel welcomes troops

Enlarge As Turkey considers whether to allow the United States to use its territory for a possible war against Iraq, a brothel owner has hatched plans to offer US soldiers a pleasurable welcome, the Anatolia news agency reported Friday.

Ali Rumuz, who already runs a brothel in the southeastern city of Diyarbakir, has applied to authorities to open a second establishment in the neighbouring city of Mardin to serve US soldiers, the agency said.

According to press reports, US forces are planning to set up logistical support bases in Mardin if Turkey allows them to deploy there, ahead of a possible invasion of northern Iraq.

In his petition, Rumuz said he could set up a "20-room modern brothel" in two months.

Brothels are legal in Turkey and local officials were evaluating Rumuz's application.

Earlier this month, the Turkish parliament spurned a US request for the deployment of 62,000 US soldiers here, but the governing party has hinted that it might call a second vote on the issue.

It doesn't look good for the brothel workers in Turkey. I doubt they'll get much business from U.S. troops. Maybe the French can chip in and help out. They're good at screwing their allies and paying the price.

This may change the picture as to possible Frence involvement in the war. At least the active participation of the French Foreign Legion and the French Marine Marsouins et Bigors now seems more likely. If not the Belgians.

Music appeals to one and all. And this time it is the niece of the most wanted man, Osama bin Laden, who wishes to launch a pop career in Britain.

Waffa bin Laden, 26, who is said to resemble Natalie Imbruglia, has been working with Madonna producer Nellee Hooper and John Benson, the man who discovered All Saints. She is also believed to have been advised by former Fugees star Wyclef Jean, according to a report in The Sun.

The US trained lawyer, whose father Yeslam is the Al-Qaeda terror leader's brother, moved to London six months ago. She has been working on demos and is hoping to sign a record deal.

However, despite having a good sultry voice, she fears her name may put labels off.

Said mum Carmen: "It is terrible for our daughter. Our world is the West and to have this family association is very difficult."

But record company boss and Pop Idol Nasty Simon Cowell doesn't rate her chances. "I wouldn't touch her with a bargepole. There's only one worse surname you could have to launch a pop career - and that's Hitler," he added.

Well, she has a point about her name. But I would think that her name *Waffa* would be at least as distinctive as that of Madonna or Cher, or other one-name wonders, and perhaps she could arrange a moniker along the lines of that of Euro pop-rock chanteuse Axelle Red.

But I'll judge her music on its melodic and lyrical contents, not that of her family associations. And maybe her later generation offers a hope for the future that earlier ones have abandoned. Yeah, I'd certainly prefer to hear bin-Laden family music than reports of some of their other exports with which we've recently become too familiar.

Sing, little girl. Entertain, and give old men and young ones a smile, and maybe the world will not go up in flames.
