For his part, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein made clear he would resist. "When the enemy starts a large-scale battle, he must realize that the battle between us will be open wherever there is sky, land and water in the entire world," the Iraqi leader told his military commanders in remarks carried by the official Iraqi news agency.

Wonder what happens if Saddam outs himself before we do?

Very interestng. Considering that we're about to have 275,000 Inspectors (in the mode of Harry Callahan, not Clouseau), not surprising, though.

Stalemate? If Saddam pre-emptively anthaxes a city and "reveals" himself, we do nothing? And if he does it a 2nd time, and a 3rd? I don't understand what you mean by stalemate.

I agree. It's a pretty foolish statement. The whole country wouldn't stop their rage and anger until Saddam was dead and his brew-dall-ized head was on a spike.

Well, i can partly understand it as a strategic decision. Lets say there is a small scale anthrax attack tomorrow. Everyone would know who did it, I don't think a coverup would work. But the attack might not be large enough to trigger a nuclear response. If we don't have a way to figure out how to thwart the trigger mechanism, incinerating Saddam might simply result in mass scale attacks. Perhaps this is what TGS is talking about, I don't know.

Truth is, we can only guess what the whole country would do if, say, Baltimore were anthraxed tomorrow and by weeks end thousands were dying and infected. We, as Americans have never faced as an immediate a threat as this. We are venturing into unchartered waters.

in the early hours of Tuesday...which is, interestingly enough, a FULL MOON, so (!) on the UN

The Rising of the Moon

Ireland.

Oh, then tell me Sean O'Farrell,
tell me why you hurry so.
Hush me Buchall hush and listen,
and his cheeks were all a-glow.
I bear orders from the captain,
Get you ready quick and soon,
For the pikes must be together
By the Rising of the Moon.

    Chorus:
By the Rising of the Moon,
By the Rising of the Moon,
For the pikes must be together
By the Rising of the Moon.

Oh, then tell me Sean O'Farrell
Where the gathering is to be.
In the old spot by the river,
Right well known to you and me.
One more word for signal token,
    Whistle up the marching tune.
With your pike upon your shoulder
By the Rising of the Moon.

    Chorus:
By the Rising of the Moon,
By the Rising of the Moon,
With your pike upon your shoulder
By the Rising of the Moon.

Out of many a mud wall cabin
Eyes were watching thru' the night.
Many a manly heart was throbbing
    For the coming morning light.
    Murmers ran along the valley,
    Like the banshee's lonely croon,
And a thousand pikes were flashing
By the Rising of the Moon.

    Chorus:
By the Rising of the Moon,
By the Rising of the Moon,
And a thousand pikes were flashing
By the Rising of the Moon.

    There beside the singing river
That dark mass of men were seen,
Far above their shining weapons hung
    Their own beloved green.
Death to every foe and traitor,
    Forward strike the marching tune,
And hurrah me boys for freedom,
Tis the Rising of the Moon.

    Chorus:
Tis the Rising of the Moon,
Tis the Rising of the Moon,
And hurrah me boys for freedom,
Tis the Rising of the Moon.

"For his part, Iraqi President Saddam Hussein made clear he would resist. "When the enemy starts a large-scale battle, he must realize that the battle between us will be open wherever there is sky, land and water in the entire world,"

Is this an order to Saddam's terrorist pals to strike us in the sky, land and water?

It would be of some value to see who stands with us in a vote, but I am not sure it is worth it to do this or go to the UN at all ever because it seems to have harmed the morale among many people. It is difficult to see your home, your country dragged through the mud by third world nobodies for six months when you are trying to keep morale up.

At one point I would have thought it of great value to get a vote, but after all these months of wranglings and hatred of the US I don't think it is worth anything anymore.

Last time in 1991 the coalition with other countries caused us to pull back and not finish the job. We don't need any more of that either. All this dragging things out sort of looks like we might pull back again. I hope not.

You mean he's going to declare that he's gay? That WOULD be a twist in the plot.
