Well, that is consistent with the French character -- one thinks of 1870 and Clemenceau's remark around 1910 when it was suggested the French adopt a modern, inconspicuous uniform: Les Pantaloons rouge, c'est la France!.

Your posts are interesting and hopeful. I must say, it is difficult not to be frustrated at the debacle at the UN and the perfidiousness of the French, Germans and Russians. I am curious what you think we can realistically do to the French to make them pay, for surely we cannot let their treachery go unanswered. We should probably start, at the time the ultimatum is given, by all three of the US, UK and Spain recalling their ambassadors and giving the French embassy and consular staffs 72 hours to leave. While in the modern world that might seem small, it would be an unmistakable gesture in diplomatic protocol that the French could not miss. I should think we might follow with England and Spain closing their borders with France, and all of us requiring visas for French citizens to enter our countries.

What does the birdy say about why Chirac is so stupid as to let it be known that he would never force Iraq to disarm. It seems to me that he has to know that he is going to surely look like an appeaser of evil once the Iraqi people are free to tell their stories about how evil Saddam is. I mean our generals fully expect many in the Iraq army to join forces with us and fight Saddamm. It sure seems that France would anticipate this or worry to some extent that it might happen. I don't understand why they are being so bold as to basically be giving Saddam a pass when there is such a risk of his evilness becoming even more exposed. Does anyone have this question too? Can anyone answer this question?

Rush had an audio clip today of Clinton verbally stabbing Blair in the back. I don't remember what Clinton said but it sounded like he was not too happy with his old buddy Blair.

Obviously, Chirac is desperate to keep us out of Iraq. We probably won't know all the reasons why until we get in there. It is stunning to what lengths France is going to in order to oppose us here. From sending their diplomats out to uncommitted countries on the UN SC, to threatening Eastern Europe for supporting us, now to encouraging Turkey to not allow us to use their airspace. It looks like they are playing this hand to the bitter end. Their next move is to try to turn Jordan and Saudi Arabia against us, to not allow us use of their bases and airspace. It's frightening how close they are getting to "aiding and abetting the enemy". They have done about everything, short of sending troops to fight for Saddam.

Believe me, I'm as frustrated as anyone with the UN "charades". Paybacks can be a "Hillary" if you get my drift. ;-) We need to see just what all the ties were between Saddam and these major powers opposing us, especially France. As I said in another post, it is stunning to see the lengths to which they are willing to go to hinder our effort. They are now lobbying Turkey, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia to not give us use of airspace, bases, etc. If it is discovered that they have been/are directly assisting Saddam, such as sharing intelligence, expect to see your scenario played out for starters.

If this turns out to be the case (as I frankly believe it might), we would have almost no choice but to freeze all French-owned assets in the United States as security for reparations and the cost of the war, in addition to declaring all French military and diplomatic personnel in the US persona non grata and giving them their passports.

At the very least now, we should forbid any French ownership in defense related industries, forbid all mlitary sales to France, and embargo high technology exports to France.

How the war is likely to play out is another story entirely, but it is expected to surprise most people due to its shortness of duration and relative little bloodshed.

This will be a sort of sweet revenge providing the actual business of governing a liberated Iraq proceeds without major incident. There are many who cannot say often enough how Bush has failed at diplomacy. I look forward to France's opposition being revealed for what it is, unprincipled, naked ambition. And I also look forward to Powell answering those charges after a relatively short and successful military action. The Dems in particular who criticize Bush's diplomacy, criticize the well liked and admired Powell. With victory in hand they will be made to look small.

Out of curiosity, has your little bird sung any Iranian tunes? Their relative silence leaves me curious as does their relationship with France.
