Back when they first gave us MRE's and we still had the steel helmet we'd fill one with water to boil on a pack stove and every one would toss their MRE pouch into the boiling water to heat it up.
One resourceful troop we had decided that after everyone had heated their meal he was gonna use the "hot leftover water" to make some Hot Chocolate. Made sense at the time.
When he drank said beverage we all learned a lesson from his sacrifice. Their is a light coating of an oil on the outside of the MRE individual packages that left residue in the water. That little concoction had that poor guy crapping like a pet goose for so long he had to be medivaced out of the field for extream dehydration.
Lesson learned......:o)

The MRE's I have eaten were pretty good, but I still prefer C rations. I was amazed at watching the young guys eat 3 MRE's a day,and still want more. Each one of those mothers must have about 3,000 calories in it,and one a day plus a snack was all any normal person would want.
