Yeah, pretty much. I lived there for a year - my parents and brother for 3 years.

The Azores are appx. 900 miles off the coast of Portugal. The Hurricanes are generated off the northern part of Africa, I believe. It was different living on 'The Rock' as the military and dependents called it. Terceira Island is 18 miles x 10 miles.

I remember there was a tiny 'exposure' of land on the north side of the island, near Lajes Field. It was called "AWOL Rock", lol !
