Dixie Chicks Remark Irks Country Fans

The Dixie Chicks are drawing harsh words from country music fans for remarks singer Natalie Maines made about President George W. Bush during a recent performance in London.
Maines told the audience earlier this week, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."
Angry phone calls flooded Nashville radio station WKDF-FM on Thursday, some calling for a boycott of the Texas trio's music.
The group released a statement Thursday saying they have been overseas for several weeks and "the anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."
In a separate statement Thursday, Maines said, "I feel the president is ignoring the opinion of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."
The Dixie Chicks will kick off a U.S. tour in support of their multi-platinum album "Home" on May 1 in Greenville, South Carolina. The group's hits include "Wide Open Spaces," "Ready to Run" and "Landslide."

Yeah,it could be just damage control, but I find it interesting that they evidently are not making excuses for Maines, but are distancing themselves from her. Can't wait to see how this plays out.

Remember when Freddie Fender went to Canada and did basically the same thing? His career has never been the same since. "Good Ole Boys and Women" DON'T forget!

Maines: "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."
>>And that Maines said this in London and not Dallas. Maines is a real profile in courage, ain't she?
Exactly. Say that in front of an audience in Dallas,
Houston, Lubbock (her hometown, where the #1 country station is having a 'Chicks-Free Weekend'), or San
Antonio, and see what happens!
"And those limey eyes they were eying the prize
Some people call manly footwear
And they said, 'You're from down south
And when you open your mouth
You always seem to put your foot there."

>> Whoops, I forgot, they're against killing.
But, have you heard their song "Goodbye Earl"? :)

These chicks haven't been truly Country since they went pop for the mainstream. Now they're just another obnoxious, Grammy-grovelling group of Hollywood trashActually, their latest album had some great bluegrass on it that had my toddler and preschooler dancing to beat the band. So sorry we had to give that one away.
If there's any truth to the suggestion by one FReeper that they can Natalie and get a new lead singer, I'm available. You should just HEAR me in the shower on "Traveling Soldier" and "Cowboy Take Me Away."

The local Nashville media is finally all over this.

Dear Brits,
Just so you know, we're ashamed the Dixie Chicks are from Texas. We wish they'd move to Iraq, which is more in tune with their beliefs.
Signed,
The patriotic citizens of the U.S.A.

I don't buy the Dixie Chicks excuse for bashing America on foreign soil. Too often people hide behind the First Amendment to justify cowardly and irresponsible statements. This is NOT a matter of free speech. The Dixie Chickens are free to sow anti-Americanism abroad at the very moment we need unity as we approach war; but the people are also free to boycott their music and radio stations that give air time to this unpatriotic group. For me, listening to the Dixie Chicks now is like hearing nails on a chalkboard.

That's a great idea and I am gonna encourage all of my like minded buds that can't attend the Atlanta rally to do just that. Me, I'm gonna break mine in pieces and make it into a necklace to wear tomorrow.
