Strange behavior, yes. Well... look at her sister's behavior! But I don't blame either of them. They are CHILDREN!

"The kidnapping still stands since they were married that night, although ater the prisoners in jail get through with the Mitchells I dont think they would want to live anymore."

Perhaps not. A trusting warden may well take the Mitchells in as live-in help..... 8~(

No, wait. See, that sketch that we have seen was made with "Emmanuel" in mind.

Back when Mary C. supposedly described the abductor as wearing a driving cap, there was never a sketch of her description given out to the PUBLIC. This was, in fact, a big bone of contention for a lot of people: "Why don't they get Mary C. to tell the sketch artist what she knows, then publish the sketch?" Well, for whatever reason, they didn't.

Then in October, she is said to have suddenly had a memory-jog, and remembered Emmanuel, and got thinking that maybe that was who it was. I think she remembered the voice, but couldn't place it till October. It was then that they had the sketch which you now see, made. I think other family members who saw Emmanuel, when he worked on their roof, probably contributed their descriptions to the making of that sketch, too.

And, you know that muslim-style cap that we've seen Emmanuel photographed wearing? I could see how in the dark, Mary C. may have seen that, and when she insisted that the cap had no bill, or almost no bill, they thought she meant an English driving cap.

I know, I agree with you too.

I think the question of why Elizabeth did what she did, and this nutjob's unbelievable craziness, are starting to make this more of a mystery of the inside of the human mind, rather than a mystery of where on earth the girl could be.

Thank God at least THAT question is now answered!

I don't understand why people can't see that a young, naive, girl, could easily be controlled, used, deluded, scared out of her wits, and maybe drugged.

What MK has said that she saw is an amalgam of what Eliz. told her to tell her parents and what her parents told her to tell the police.

Since when? Care to source that allegation?

Oh, and don't tell me, let me guess. Her parents WANTED her to go off with this crazed psycho possible pedophile. It was all a plot. And they told the sister to tell lies to make sure Elizabeth wasn't found.

But for some reason they kept going around whining on camera that they wanted her back. And for some reason they pestered the police to look for this guy. And for some reason they are "pretending" to be overjoyed that she is back.

Oh, okay. THOU SAYEST.

Wait a minute. Are you saying that there is some proof that Mary C. said absolutely that the abductor was clean-shaven?

That's not what I remember. They were incredibly cryptic about whatever Mary C. had actually said. One day some poster speculated about a beard. I and many others said, "Hmmm!"

I started wondering if Ricci could have had a beard then, or worn a fake one. But then, I am one who thought Ricci was the guy.

Ed is very far from deserving a pedestal, that's for sure!

But knowing what we know now, I think his only real faults in this thing are perhaps stupidity and naivete.

You know, we've all noticed that Ed and Tom are weird. Could weirdness run in the family? Maybe poor Elizabeth is a little bit off, too--that is, suggestible and susceptible to delusion?

That thing about the cousin is mind-blowing. I wonder, also, if maybe Mitchell had plans for MARY CATHERINE?
I would think that he got the cousin's address from Elizabeth. If she was deluded, or intimidated, or brainwashed, or drugged, enough to follow the psycho and his "wife" around, then she'd have done what he told her--and maybe she gave him the cousin's name to please him. Frightening.

"What the hell was going on there, that a drifter that looks like Charles Manson can live in a teepee in the desert and wander the streets panhandling with two women in veils and headscarves -- and nobody investigates? Especially with a young teen girl in tow?"

Man this is DIVERSITY, and MULTICULTURALISM. You're not allowed to criticize anyone, regardless of how bizarre, weird, offensive or just plain stupid their dress, or behavoir is. This is the new America being created for average Americans by the DemonRATS, liberals, socialists and the UN.

Hi Devil..

MHO on why he didn't take Mary Catherine, is that she didn't fit the bill, IOW's wasn't mature enough for his needs and purposes. A nine-year old may have been way too young to take as a wife...(OK, neither was a 14 year-old..but nevertheless)..

My interest lies in finding out if Elizabeth had any contact or interaction with her abductor BEFORE she was kidnapped. I guess it would all begin then. One step at a time.

Of course, her very structured life, may have been a contributing factor in any rebellion, IF (and that is a HUGE "IF") she was taken with him, literally.

I'm looking for answers.

We might never know all about it. If it were my daughter, I would put a lid on it. Who would want it all told about their daughter, I wonder???

I haven't posted here in a very long time, because my mother has been very ill. I come to this forum nearly every day, for a few minutes, to catch up on what's going on. I am very grateful to all of you for keeping me informed. I have a free night tonight, because my mother is at my sister's home.

I know that there are a lot of questions about Elizabeth Smart. On television, I've heard various people wonder why she didn't try to get away, and even question whether she was kidnapped. I don't know what happened, and I imagine that only Elizabeth and her kidnappers could tell us. I am writing this only because I hope everyone will pray that she can recover from her ordeal.

When I was 17 years old, working part-time in an industrial branch at a bank, I was kidapped by a bank robber. He burst into the bank, wearing a mask and carrying a gun, and jumped over the teller counter. After taking all of the money from the teller drawers, he grabbed me and told me to get my purse. He took me from the bank to my car, which was parked just outside, and made me drive him away from the bank. He told me that we were going to Chicago. The bank I worked in was in central Mississippi. I had very little gas in my car, but I told him that I would take him anywhere he wanted to go, but that we would need to buy gas or we wouldn't get very far.

As we sped down the rural road away from the bank, with his foot over mine on the accelerator and his gun banging against my temple, all I could think of was that I was going to die unless I did what he told me to do. My instinct for survival was so strong that I was willing to do anything he asked, just so he wouldn't kill me.

I was very fortunate. The bank robber found my driver's license in my purse and thought that he had kidnapped the wrong person. My sister and I took turns working at the industrial branch on alternate Fridays. My sister was unmarried and thus had the same last name as my grandfather, who owned the bank. I was married, so my last name was different, and the robber thought he had taken the wrong person. He told me to pull the car over to the side of the road and get out. He said that he was going to count to ten and then shoot me. I dove into a ditch alongside the road. (Of course, I don't think he really intended to shoot me, he just wanted to get away and not have me see which way he went.)

In any event, I think it is very difficult for other people to understand the mindset of a kidnapping victim. After my ordeal was over, a few people who lived in our small town had the audacity to suggest that I was in cahoots with the robber and was planning to split the money with him. I'm sure some of them believe that to this day, 30 years later.

To complete the story, the bank robber was caught and pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to 99 years, served 18 months, got out and committed a murder, went back to prison, stabbed his cellmate to death with a fork, was convicted of murder a second time, and was killed by a deputy sheriff five years ago when he tried to escape before testifying in his civil rights action against the prison officials.

To this day, I do not like to go inside a bank. I almost always use the drive-in window if I can. I know that I am very fortunate to be alive. Elizabeth Smart was three years younger than I was when she was kidnapped, and she was held for nine months. I can't even begin to imagine the horrors that poor child faced. I can't understand why some people (and I'm not referring to Freepers) seem to want to blame her for what happened. I pray that she will be healed and I am so happy that she is home with her family.

I'm sorry to have been so wordy, but I really felt the need to say this.

Mary Katherine was on her way to tell her parents about Elizabeth when she saw the perp and Elizabeth again. There was a set of stairs next to the master bedroom, which separated the rest of the bedrooms. It was speculated by us early on the threads that MK saw Elizabeth and the perp, and they were standing or sitting between her and the parents' bedroom, there was no way for her to get to them without letting the perp know that she was awake.

Just on a side note, there are a lot of parents in Utah who are now teaching their children to make a lot of noise in these situations, that they're a lot better off yelling, than being taken quietly with the abductor.

Oh, come on, the title of the piece is hardly proof that someone thinks that this event, whatever it was, could be a valid marriage.

I'm hearing conflicting stories on whether or not Mitchell was clean shaven when he took Elizabeth. Some media reports say that he was clean shaven when Mrs Smart hired him to work at the house, other reports say he wasn't. I really can't wait for the trial to clear up a lot of the confusion.

Hi! Long time no see. Mitchell is married to Barzee, they were married in the Salt Lake temple. So even if he "married" Elizabeth in some bizarre ritual, he is committing bigamy, among other things, and Utah's law are pretty specific about that kind of behavior.

Thanks for posting that terrifying story, pollyg. I'm so sorry you had to go through all that. Fear makes people do (and not do) amazing things.

That picture which you posted is very important. Can you tell me how you know that it was taken days before Eliz. disappeared? If you are correct, then it raises even more questions (as if we didn't have enough already) about the latest sketch and Ed Smart's statements about what MK has said/remembered.

This is about as different from the description that MK is said to have given as one can get. How could anyone have seen this person in their bedroom and not describe him as having long hair, beard, scruffy, dressed weird in robes, etc.? And if MK had ever seen Emmanuel looking like this EVEN ONCE, how could she not have said "It was Emmanuel." How many people like this had she ever seen?

Curiouser and curiouser.

We read you and congratulate you as a survivor. What with the er' fugitive fellow's absolutely informative post on brainwashing, you have both given we dissenters a lot of support. I do wonder and I have not got the time, are we who believe the vile control of Mitchell, absolutely resposible, running 60/40 or 50/50 on FR.?

Anyway, Mitchell is finished with little girls, or even any girls for many, many, years.
