Reagan's "star wars" was an important factor in the fall of the Soviet Union, was a significant factor in the incredible computer revolution of the 1990's (the SDI computers were 300-400MHz --- 386 architecture computers!), and did the ground work for todays operational SDI system.
If you don't believe its operational, you haven't been paying attention...

"Reagan's star wars was a monumental failure" You've ignored the fact that Reagan's threat to proceed with Star Wars and bankrupt the Soviet Union, contributed to the disintegration of the "Evil Empire"...
The Soviets must have had some fear of this system..whether valid or not --- "Star Wars" was a monumental success...
