I've been getting back into painting with oils after a long absence. This both inspires me and discourages me.....

Artrenewal.com is a great site. Bouguereau is the king - and yet he remains largely unknown in a time when artists seem to be selling their dropcloths as masterworks.

This entire site is a direct challenge to the cheap leftist junk that has dominated the art world for so long. In addition to containing hundreds of stunning paintings, there are many articles decrying the destruction of artistic technique by the modernists and calling for its return. Thank you very much for the post.

Bouguereau and the English Victorians are my favorite painters. My home and office are decorated with beautiful oil reproductions I got from the Museum Company and elsewhere.

Extremely soothing and peace-of-mind inducing.

I first discovered Bougereau at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford Connecticut in 1984. I became enamored of him and the whole 19th century French Academy. This did not sit well with either teachers or students at Art School (back in southern Massachusetts). They were too busy gushing over Matisse. Some of the criticism is justifiable but I have yet to see ANY painter that can match his level of craftsmanship.
