I saw on the news tonight that more artillery had just arrived in Kuwait, and the Americans were practice firing. Maybe the Iraqis thought it was the real thing.

Good job at connecting the dots! I think I heard the Iraqi freedom fighters have already been brought over from their training in "new" Europe - hopefully this can be a source of inspiration for both sides towards the liberation of Iraq!

Hungarian and US officials have given few details

Controversy is growing in Hungary over a US air base where several thousand Iraqi exiles are to be trained for a special role in the overthrow of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
The BBC's Nick Thorpe was one of the first journalists allowed onto the base at Taszar in southern Hungary.

The first wave of 1,500 Iraqis are due to arrive later this week at the base.

US military vehicles mingle with trucks bringing sand for the construction of the training facilities.

Local mayors and opposition deputies accuse the government of not telling the truth about the nature of the mission



Extra coils of barbed wire are being unrolled and new watchtowers constructed.

In the streets of the sleepy Hungarian villages around the air base, Hungarian police patrols have been stepped up.

Long lines of khaki-coloured tents have been erected for the 3,000 Iraqis who will be trained in the coming months.

They stand out vividly against the snow - this is the coldest month in Hungary and temperatures reach -15 C at night.

'Liaison' role

The main controversy surrounds the exact nature of the training the men will receive.

The Hungarian Defence Minister, Ferenc Juhasz, insists there will be no military training whatsoever.

The American base commander, Major General David Barno says that while some of those selected have a military background, many do not.

He declined for security reasons to give details of the kind of weapons they will be trained to use.

Iraqi opposition sources in London say that most of those selected are former officers in the Iraqi army.

Their role in a probable war is usually described as "civilian-military liaison".

Local mayors and opposition deputies have accused the Hungarian Government of not telling the truth about the nature of the mission.

I believe your comments are based on a common misunderstanding of the physics of a sonic boom. The boom does not occur as the aircraft (or anything else) breaks the "sound barrier". It is in reality a pressure shock wave that is present whenever the aircraft is exceeding mach 1. The "crack" of a bullet is a miniature sonice boom! You can get mulitible booms from some aircraft because you get a separate shock cone from different parts of the aircarft. The F-18, and I've seen F-14 ones too, mpeg, if its the one I think it is, is actually demonstrating the low pressure areas surrounding various parts of the aircraft. WHat you are seeing is the moisture in the air condensing, due to decrease in pressure. I've seen those on aircraft on final approach, under the right conditions of temperature and humidity. I've even seen the same effect, or almost the same, sitting on the ground, but with the engines running. Some times you get a little mini tornado of water vapor going into the engine. When flying on a comercial aircraft you can sometimes see the effect when they put the spoilers up.

But with those you can have 200 feet AGL

Come to think about it, you could have 200 feet mach 1.1 or so with either the F/FB-111 or the B-1A. British Tornado, ground attack varient, can do that also. The B-1 and presumably the B-2, can do the 200 feet bit, but not the mach 1+ on the deck.
