...Stephen Pollard writes in The Telegraph that the U.S. (and Britain?) may stage a U.N. walkout if the obstructionists carry the day at the Security Council:

Well-connected advisers tell me that if, as now seems likely, the UN refuses to back action against terror, Mr Bush will announce a "temporary" suspension of America's membership, to be accompanied by an offer: if the UN gets its act together and carries out long-overdue reforms, America (and its money) will return. But if there is no reform, the temporary withdrawal will, de facto, become permanent.

I don't know, but this may have been the plan all along - we needed time to get our troops ready and we needed to prove, once and for all, that the UN is totally irrelevant; in fact, they are a joke.

If we left we would take our 25% of the UN revenue, Britain would probably leave also taking their 6% and Japan taking their 13% and Spain taking their 6%, that's a 50% reduction their their operating expenses right there. In addition we provide 35% of the UN military budget (actually it's more than that because we furnish military equipment to many of the other nations and logistics for all of them).

We also provide 60% of their humanitarian aid.

If we leave there is no UN. If the remaining countries (Russia who provides 2%, China who provides less than 1%, France 6% and Germany 6%) who's going to pay the light bill? Who's going to pay for all those useless UN employees?

Geez, what program were you watching tonite. Wasn't the same Bush speech I watched. It was boring, stilted, in monotone, little soundbite tidbits rather than having a conversation with the people about what the situation is. No Tony Blair here tonite. Now I love him dearly, but tonite's performance was low on the performance scale. Whoever told him to do this gave him bad advice. He looked like he wanted to be anywhere other than in that room. I think Rove put him up to it because Helen Thomas, the old hag, was complaining 2 days ago about Bush's lack of open press conferences, and they did it to stop any further talk about it. But this was not a good Bush show tonite, not at all. Only good thing from my point of view is that he wouldn't give a deadline, which means he can now attack at any time with impunity.

Of course it is. This was "leaked" to "encourage" the Security Council members to vote yes. Bush is playing hardball. Wish he would play like that with the rats.

They bitch about the cost of defending our nation, but never say a word about paying 60% of the U.N. expences.
If they want to bitch about the war costs, we can save enough to pay for it by getting rid of the wasteful spending on the U.N.
That's only fair. Sounds like logical economics to me!
