I hate to disappoint you, but this country is 11 years weaker, shallower, and more ungrateful than it was in 1992. The embers at Ground Zero were still warm when the people of this country decided that it was time to move on to "more important" things like prescription drug plans for seniors, and the people of New York decided that the most pressing issue in New York City was a smoking ban in bars and restaurants.
