I thought I heard Craig say that there would be a roll call vote at 5:30 but it was for a vote on a different nominee. I missed the name or for what position the person was nominated.

I'm confused. Doesn't the Senate Leadership make the rules? If so, they why are we bothering with this cloture vote? Why doesn't leadership change the rules on cloture today (majority to close wins) and just start voting on these judicial nominees?
I understand Sen. Hatch had the cajones to do just that in committe last week.

I hope a supporter of Estrada points out the similarities between Estrada's candidacy and Berzon's candidacy in 2000.
From FR: Dem, Leahy Double standard for Clinton's Marsha Berzon [9th Circuit] and Miguel Estrada.
The Democrats sure have a double standard. (And very, very short memories.)
Clinton's candidate for the 9th Circuit of appeals, Marsha Berzon, was confirmed (64-34)* by the Senate in 2000. Democrats got confirmation of Clinton's leftist candidate, but won't give Bush's candidate, Estrada, the same courtesy.
- Supporters of her said
We understand from her affiliations with liberal groups that she is probably on the left of the political spectrum, but that is the norm for this President's [Clinton's] nominees, and it does not mean that she will be an activist if she is appointed. - She graduated from Harvard (Radcliffe)
- she had no record,
- She had not been a judge
- She had had connections with far-left organizations
- those with reservations about her said, "only time will tell" [whether she would become an activist on the bench], and gave her the benefit of the doubt.
- **Leahy demanded a "vote up or a vote down" (which she got).
The Democrats don't only have a double standard. Democrats have a "whopper" of a double standard.

Democrats now extend their usual class warfare tactics to judicial nominees. I brought this up to a Democrat aid on the phone and he didn't like it...

Craig (R)Idoaho is talking ... but not about Estrada I was not listening closely at the very beginning. The subject of Estrada was called, then I did hear a reference to the vote but did not hear the time. Then Reid took the floor and there was some discussion of who would get to speak first, I thought he mentioned Bingaman, and Hatch stood and granted Craig the time.
I did think when the Estrada vote was mentioned there was a different tone, but thought it might be wishful thinking.
As I type Sen. Hatch commending Craig on his remarks and associating himself with them.
Ah, now Bingaman is up addressing oil reserves, so I was correct that his name had been mentioned.
Hmmmmmmm

I'd only hope that Estrada invites Bork to be a guest at his swearing-in ceremony...

"Being Hispanic for us means much more than having a surname," said New Jersey Rep. Bob Menendez, a member of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus. "It means having some relationship with the reality of what it is to live in this country as a Hispanic American."
This is the Democrat case against Estrada...
