Troubling Nissan racism sexist commercial.

Ok just an open discussion, There is a Nissan commercial with a theme of "shift". It seems to be advocating shifting respect from "somewhere" to women and people of african decent. Am I missing something? This seems to be encouraging classism and sexism. The us vs them mentality. Perhaps its a Japanese thing. Perhaps this is an indication that they don't get "it" about colorblind society. To me it says racist sexist quota people drive nissan. I know this is idealistic but this really goes over the line.

Car company commercials and fast food are the worst--it seems that all of 'em try so hard to have one representative from each race riding together, going out for burgers, etc. I wish their marketing dept would realize that most real people tend to stick with their own.

"Sexist" ?
I thought the "shifter" was supposed to represent a male sex organ anyway..
(At least that's what women and other automotive incompetents that can't use a manual transmission would have you believe.)

No crap. Here at my law school, they preach diversity like crazy. But all of the black people eat lunch with each other, the asians eat lunch with each other, and the white people take up the rest of the space. Everyone talks the talk, but in the end, that's all it is.

hmmh.. I didn't get that from the commercial. I owned lots of Nissans, starting with a 1977 280Z. They all had standard shift, manual transmissions. Until recently, Nissan made about the only 4-dr sedan with a manual tranny, the esteemed Maxima. Some of us watch car ads and when we see the word "shift" we think of rowing the gears ourselves, which we like to do. Nissan's been somewhat known as a driver's car, note the Max SE and the various flavors of SE-Rs, and now of course the 350-Z - marketed to people who like to shift.

Stick with their own? Last time I checked we are all Americans and most of all, human beings. That
'sticking with their own' mentality needs to die an ugly death.

Do they have a Black Law Student Association too?
To: longtermmemmory
I've seen it and I think you're right on the money.

could this be a tactic to avoid a jessi jackson racism suit? We are not racist because we support black racism.

What's bologna? That I embrace the idea that we are all Americans? Or that we should not succumb to the ploys of race baiters and tyrants? Jesse jackson and his ilk have no stake in 'racial' harmony and peace so of course they will do their best to monkey wrench progress. There is not a question of IF it's when. Besides when we all die, there won't be anything such as race in heaven.

All Japanese car advertising in North America is done by American and Canadian advertising agencies. The agencies also generally choose the names of the vehicles, and in concert with dealerships, send feedback to Japan about marketing strategy (for instance, the creation of Lexus, Acura, and Infiniti to go after the high-end market).

youre a utopian, the fact is, people DO stick with their own. diversity is the biggest BJ to hit america in its history. its a JOKE. when i was in school, at an excellent business school, we had a large population of minorities and foreigners, UNFORTUNATELY. and when you went to lunch, the fact was, every ehtnicity "stuck with its own" and did not mingle across ethnic lines. the hispanic students spoke spanish amongst themselves, then wrote letters to the school newspaper always complaining about the racism that made them so segregated and unaccepted. sorry, youre dead wrong!

I am not trying to start a fight with you. There's no need to get so mad at me. I don't believe in Jesse Jackson's type of diversity curriculum forced down everyone's throat. Also, you should read my profile. People from different ethnicities DO MIX, and my parents were mixing for thirty five years longer than many same 'race' marriages.
