He's totally worth listening to. He's been classified at "neo-conservative" and has written LOSING THE RACE, about how blacks need to move on from blaming whites and believing that racism is responsible for anything and everything that's wrong in their lives.

"Al Sharton is an inveterate liar." Oooh. The guy is very class conscious and close to seeming snobbish, but he's worth it.

"The guy is very class conscious and close to seeming snobbish"Yes, that's what rubs me the wrong way.
I wouldn't want to room with him.
That being said, I'm the last person who should be finding fault with personality foibles...
To: Torie
did you get the impression he didnt care much for ol'Al?..*L*..and personally I didnt mind his demeanor at all...He acted no different than a lot of intelligent "white" guests I've seen on that show....To me..the message is the key

Insufferable? Maybe, but only in the way that brilliant people are often insufferable. I identify a ravenous hunger for truth in him, and no disposition to suffer fools lightly, qualities that in my view overshadow whatever insufferable, pompous sheen may lightly coat his personality.

I just got through watching the program. He doesn't mince words when talking about jj and Fat Al Sharpton.
To: Torie
His book is "Authentically Black." If you missed him, as I basically did, we can see him on the rerun on Booknotes tonight at 10:58 PM Eastern Time... again that's C-SPAN .. John McWhorter , University of California, Berkeley
I see the schedule states that he wrote Essays for the Black SILENT MAJORITY. That should tell you a lot regarding his thinking. Essays for the Black Silent Majority

He's. no more insufferable than any other "typical" academic. It's not a matter of color in this case.

It's always nice to hear someone who's genuinely brilliant.
By the way I found it very interesting that he says his mother was very much into the culture of victimhood and tried hard to indoctrinate him from a very young age.
It partially confirms what I have felt for a long time, that indoctrination and upbriging only works to a certain extent, that really it's our personalities that have at least as large on impact on our political leanings.
To: Torie
I saw him a year or so ago on CSPAN and recently on O'Reilly. He seems like a very smart guy.
