>>>No one seems to have the stomach for a real filibuster today...

Well, someone on the GOP side better grow some cojones and real quick too. Calling Bill Frist! Have you got what it takes, to stand up to the leftwing scum in the Senate?

Show us some cojones, Mister Leader!

Thanks for posting this. I read it in the New York Post today. It's really great stuff. I've been advocating that the Repubs get some spine for years. But no, they cater to the Libs and we all suffer as a result. FReegards.

The republicans are cowards... or idiots. they either don't know how to kill the enemies of freedom, or they lack the courage to drive the wooden stake.

In either case, their timidity and "go along to get along" attitude has severely endangered our children's futures in the long term... and very likely in the short term as well.

Frist needs to walk in this morning at 3AM with somebody's head in a wicker basket... and again at 4AM with another... and again at 5AM with another... and by the time we get to five thirty... the judge would be confirmed... and we could vote on the next ten by noon.

metaphoricallly speaking... of course.
But with so many of the levers of power in our hands, to bring about necessary change, somebody's gotta be willing to get bloodied, in order to force change. FORCE is the only thing that outs tyrants... you gdstupidfingrepublicans... and MOST democrats are merely pre emergant tyrannists... Advice to bush and company, including frist, go for the throat or don't waste our time.

same for Iraq.. enough... cr$p or get off the pot.

Instead of holding the Democrats' feet to the fire to force them to keep talking,

Oh gifted one..... just how do you force someone to keep talking? Please explain that procedure to the forum. What if they don't want the floor and don't want to talk. How do you make them? What if they don't seek recognition? The senate just sits idle awaiting someone to seek recognition...

SCREW THAT... show us the severed heads!!!

I am so tired of the panty waist crap. With the kind of power available to us right now, CLINTON would have already fired up the ovens for us conservatives...

all I want is one battle to be jammed down their bleeding throats successfully. whats the problem with that?

Instead of holding the Democrats' feet to the fire to force them to keep talking, the GOP leadership allowed senators to go home for the Presidents' Day recess without voting on Estrada. Now, Republicans are letting the Democrats drag out the debate day after day, without forcing obstinate senators to stay on the floor round the clock and on weekends.

...
I like this girl! feet to the fire

All I ever had to know about Linda Chavez is now summed up in one phrase.....

"almost derailed Clarence Thomas' confirmation to the high court"

Yeah baby, almost, however Judge Thomas is now a supreme court justice, and Chavez......well, she's snipin' from the right, like other Suslov conservatives.

I'll ask you again. How do you force them to keep talking? Do you understand the question? How do you force them to talk when they don't seek recognition? Sure you can have some quorum calls every so often but that mostly gets your ppl up and to the floor as they have to have 51 to conduct business.... so in effect the Dems could stay home, sleep and keep their one Senator there to object to any unamimous consent request.

Again how do you force someone to talk. Enlighten us.

Possibly the Republicans want to get some business done, and are waiting for the war to start so that a filibuster by the Dems while our soldiers are in harm's way will be all the more repulsive.

Turkey is now the reason why the war has been held up as a recent change in the political makeup of their parliament has made it difficult to get them to agree on allowing the second front for the war to amass on their territory.

Democracy is a b*tch.

What he meant was "force them to keep talking or have the vote. Under the rules as understood up until now, they have to keep talking, or at least "holding the floor" or the filibuster is over and the question can be called. Didn't you ever watch "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" with Jimmy Stewart? There have been some really funny incidents during filibusters. Such as putting screen up so the member can relieve himself (or herself in at least one State Legislature). But important point is that the filibustering Senator must keep talking to hold the floor, he must already have that recognition, else a vote on issue in question can take place. He must also stay on the floor of the Senate. Time outs for a 3 day weekend are normally not allowed.

If you want to end a filibuster, you must get a supermajority of votes to do it. The Republicans don't have the necessary 60 (IIRC) votes, so the filibuster continues. If the shoe were on the other foot, the lamestream media would be whinning about shutting Congress down, not doing the important work of government, etc, etc.

"Such as putting screen up so the member can relieve himself (or herself in at least one State Legislature)."

I believe the incident to which you are referring happened in a Board of Alderman's meeting in the City of St. Louis! Which can hardly be compared to the US Senate, one hopes......

The real question is .... how do you force someone to talk when they aren't seeking recognition and object to a unamious consent to a vote?

Better yet... maybe you can explain it for all of us and be sure and use the rules of the Senate as they would be applied in a real 24/7 filibuster buster

Perhaps the stupid Republicans are trying to get a precedent set so that they can do the same once Bush loses in '04. As if the Dems would be honorable enough to give weekends off! Ha!
