I tried Mandrake Linux a couple of years ago and had a horrible time getting my hardware to work with it.
I have tried several iterations and got most of them to work with my hardware. The largest challenge for me were the ethernet cards I had in Mandrake. Even when it worked it was somewhat primitive and clunky as a desktop. It worked well as a router between my ethernet network and my token ring portable AS/400 until the ol' SCSI hard drive failed.

You're SOooo kind, thanks...
Pardon me while I creep through here. I just got back in from eating at Chili's. The streets are a little slick out there today ...
DAMON WINTER / DMNRoads south of downtown Dallas were
almost empty Tuesday due to heavy ice.

I don't live on the South side, btw. I just ripped that from the thread I posted earlier today ...
Roads are REALLY slick out there. It was misting on the way back. On top of the ice on the roads, it sure was slick ...

Really. My linux box never contacts anyone to see if I have permission to run the software.
No, it simply skips to the chase and crashes, you spend days trying to resolve the problem in the newsgroups, and finally give up in frustration...

Exactly! Win2000 is by far the best and most operating system out there, and it doesn't require the activation that XP does.

Hey, at least you're come to your senses. 90% of everyone else out hasn't come to their senses yet.

I've upgraded an ME machine, a 98 machine and a Win2000 machine. They all run better now. XP isn't perfect, but I like it better than anything since DOS 6.2.

Example: Microsoft Photodraw 2000 will not run in Windows XP. Their own program?
I didn't purchase this program with a limited life span attached to it.
What are they doing about it Nothing!!!!!!!
I don't know what voodoo your PC was subjected to, but I've been running Windows XP Professional since beta, and Photodraw 2000 runs JUST FINE!!!
XP presents me with a much more enjoyable computing experience than any previous operating system I've tried. It's not perfect, but it's still a huge improvement over Windows 98/ME, and for me it's much better than Windows 2000 because of it's better implementation of plug and play.

And if you want a notebook....?More seriously, laptops aren't upgraded often, so the installed drivers probably work. But man, I've known a lot of unhappy laptop owners. Everything from overheating to drive and display failures. I would never buy one with my own money, at least until I win the Lotto.
