TRENTON -- Wealthy developer Charles Kushner -- Gov. McGreevey's choice to become chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey -- amended his financial disclosure statement twice last week to clarify his relationship with NorCrown Bank.

But the Senate Judiciary Committee still wants him to testify before it votes on the nomination.

People who own a majority interest in a state-chartered bank are prohibited by state law from making political contributions. Kushner bought NorCrown Bank in 1996 but didn't detail how much of its stock he owned in a September disclosure statement.

I'm all for keeping dims in hot water (to appease PETA types I recommend we bring it to a boil - slowly) but this seems on its face to be an unconstitutional restriction of free speech.

Because you own a state regulated business you cannot make political donations? I'm not from New Jersey but I bet lawyers, doctors, hair stylists, pest control companies, etc. are state regulated. If state regulation applies to state chartered banks it seems all these companies and more could be similiarly restricted.

Laws are setup to overcome the failures and foibles of human nature. Election laws are reasoned on the fact that big donors want - and usually get - something in return.

Kushner stands to amass a fortune for the paltry millions he gave to politicans.

I've got a fund-raiser suggestion...the FReeperIntern Program!! Maybe that list should be sent to the boards of the surviving rat companies. A simple message might be, "Donating massive sums to the rat candidates and the DNC can be hazardous to your corporation and those who guide it!"
