Ellen, you've done it again. Sparked me from my complacency and made me respond to another of your liberal fantasies. I was actually beginning to think that you got the message (other than that lunatic statement you made on Fox about looking forward to Bush bungling the war). Now, you come back with some kind of neo-Art Buchwald column about a Saddam Hussein trial at the Hague, offering as his defense the now-cliched, liberal-inspired, limp-rag excuse that it's all our fault for making him what he is.
Ellen, that's the same excuse you liberals have been giving for everything since psychologists and counselors allowed people to blame all their mistakes on their parents. Just like it's a parent's fault if their child turns out to be a thief, it's now the Western world's fault for Saddam becoming a mass murderer. It's the Western world's fault for the lies and deception he has practiced just in the last decade.
Why, I bet it was our fault that he invaded Kuwait. We winked and nodded at him, didn't we? I'll bet if you dig deep enough, you'll find a clip of George H.W. Bush smiling at the Kuwait invasion. Of course, it will probably be an outtake of him playing with his grandkids juxtaposed through the magic of video with a shot of Saddam's tanks rolling across the border. That's the kind of proof you folks most often offer up.
And you say the oil sheikhs were going to assassinate Saddam if he launched a true democracy in Iraq? Seems to me that the Kuwaitis had just given him a medal as a valued and trustworthy ally mere days before he stabbed them in the back.
Did some greedy Western businesses feed his megalomania? Sure they did. Just like some American businesses traded with Germany long after it was obvious that that was not a smart course. But does that make them responsible for Hitler and the Holocaust? I don't think so.
Wait a minute though. A lot of your leftist liberal progenitors were historically and are now tight with the communists. Can we blame Stalin and his purges on them? And Tiananmen Square? Gee, I like that idea.
Listen up. People are responsible for their own actions. Adolf Hitler, Pol Pot, Milosevic and Saddam Hussein made their own decisions. The evil lies within them, not us. And giving despots easy outs scapegoats they can blame their evil on is neither very smart nor very productive.
So instead of defending traitors like Baghdad Jim McDermott, hoping Bush bungles the war and blaming the rest of society for the evil that is Saddam Hussein, maybe you should concentrate laying the blame for the impending war where it belongs squarely at Hussein's feet.
War is hell. And after spending three and a half months recently in the Persian Gulf region, with some 800 of the men and women who will be fighting this war, after seeing the face of this war up close and personal, I think your time would be better spent encouraging and supporting those brave Americans, rather than laying the blame at their feet.
