February 24, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - Special "hunter-killer teams and aircraft would target Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein - and his two evil sons - within 48 hours of the launch of any military campaign, The Post has learned.

The moves would include a series of massive, surgical airstrikes and commando raids in the opening hours of the action. Specially trained operatives would target Saddam, sons Uday and Qusay and other key aides.

The outgoing Carter administration and the incoming Reagan administration played "good cop -- bad cop" with the Iranians with the result that the Iranians released the hostages at the last minute before Reagan was sworn in.

It would be nice to have a definitive outcome. Would it be too much to ask that we put Saddam's head on a pike?

Actually, that was Mrs. Iguana's precise reaction this morning when I mentioned this story to her.

Ah - the good old days.

The invasion concept is called "rapid decisive operations, or "shock and awe, in military parlance.

Just so they 'keep up the skeer'.

I read here on FR that the SAS was slated for this job.

And ... there is a group of SAS already in Jordan.

No, unfortunately I wasn't close. At the time, I lived several blocks away on North Capitol Street. I had not voted for Reagan, didn't like him at all (then), but didn't want to miss a once-in-lifetime opportunity. So I took the day off and just walked down to the capitol; it was not so complicated back then. I later saw he and Nancy standing in the limo as it drove to the WH. Pretty impressive! However, I later saw the errors of my Carter-voting ways and became a Republican. Made my memories even better!!

Seems reasonable. I started voting against democrats in 1980 since it was becoming increasingly obvious that they were hell-bent on re-inventing racism, which had been legally buried in America in 65. I've found other reasons for voting against democrats since then as well.

You got started down the road of sanity before I did. But I finally got there! I voted for Reagan in 1984 and then had a child. Changed my persepctive on everything. By 1988, I couldn't stand the dems. Actually, it's too bad b/c I like to hear both sides of any argument. Today, all the dems do is throw personal attacks completely devoid of any merit. They do our country a disservice on all accounts.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- Last December, gunmen opened fire on Saddam Hussein's eldest son, Uday Hussein, as he sat in his car on a busy Baghdad street. He was shot about 10 times.

Since his heart is the size of a mustard seed, they didn't hit this vital organ.

The two-party system can only work if both of the two parties are legitimate. The democratic party ruins the entire system at this juncture; it's basically become a crime syndicate. A reasonable system might be the republicans vs the libertarians.

"While I agree that Carter should have been more forceful, and the hostages themselves said this, weren't the hostages released just prior to Reagan's inaugeration? My memory is fuzzy on this, but that is my initial reaction. I voted for Reagan but I don't remember giving him credit for this."

It would seem to me, the Iranians KNEW that Reagan would get tough. Hence the last minute release, before Reagan took office.

He may not be stupid, but why telegraph our punches? Success with any operation like this would depend at least in part on surprise. Sounds to me like somebody in the Pentagon deliberately leaked this.

The coming offensive will make the original Gulf War and the Six Days War look like long, drawn out conflicts. This is not a new tactic, just Blitzkrieg perfected as its inventors could never have imagined.
