I may return to active duty as a JAG officer, have a family, and need to provide my assignment preference list to the JAG folks.

My primary concern is a city or post that is family-friendly.

Well, I've been hearing a lot of good about Ft. Carson, Colorado. Apparently it's real nice and close to a few nice cities as well (like Colorado Springs). I'll admit, though, my knowledge is primarily limited to infantry posts.

Ft.Carson's great for family. They just finished building new qtrs on base and Colorado Srrings is a great family place. It is also a conservative city and ranks high on the yearly "Best Places to Live Polls".

Okay, reading further that you are a JAG officer with family you'd definitely enjoy Schofield or Shafter. The schools here aren't the best, but there are some good ones in the area. Still, a lot of military send their kids to the private schools. We're within 30 minutes of downtown Honolulu (as long as it's not rush hour), with UH, the symphony, and a pretty good selection of activities. The weather is always perfect for outdoor sports.

The cost of living isn't as bad as you might think since you don't spend much on utilities or clothes. Housing really isn't any more expensive than a lot of mainland cities, and the wait to get on post now is usually less than 6 months for a captain or major.
