Mexico, which has a porous 2,000-mile border with the United States, was cooperating closely in the fight against terrorism
I beg to differ

Mexico now feels spurned and believes it has little to lose politically by turning its back on Washington, analysts say. Dear Presidente Fox.....get ready for payback time...
No pun intended!

``I want to reiterate that Mexico's position has been and will be very clear. It will exclusively serve our interests, the interests of the Mexicans and no-one else,'' said Interior Minister Santiago Creel. Mexico is upset at the United States' lack of interest in talks to legalize the status of millions of undocumented Mexicans in the United States.
So, let me get this right: Mexico is allowed to exclusively serve its own interests. But, the United States is expected to exclusively serve the interests of Mexico too?
How is it in the interest of the United States to add millions of undocumented Mexicans to the American welfare rolls?

I've been supportive on FR for a long time of an open border with Mexico, for several reasons.
But if Mexico is not going to help us fully with terrorism, then the joke-of-a-border is going to become a major liability, and I'd fully support bringing the hammer down hard on Mexican illegal immigration.

Mr. Fox, how is it in Mexico's national interest to back Saddam rather than the United States? And if you back Saddam, isn't that the exact opposite of cooperating with us on the war against terrorists?

I'm all for getting illegal aliens out of the U.S. But I have to testify, too, that every person I'ver ever personally saw that I suspected was an illegal alien was working his ass off on a job I sure as hell wouldn't want.

Perhaps Mexico, which is a major petroleum producer, does not want the presently shut in capacity in Iraq to come to market and hammer oil prices?

But, isn't that *because* they are illegal and don't qualify for welfare benefits?
What happens when Uncle Sugar gives them a blank check?

Is this a true "friend"??
So Mexico wants to pressure the US to accept millions of undocumented Mexican illegal aliens into our country, Mexico wants to continue to refuse extradition treaties for Mexican criminals who commit crimes in the US and then flee across the border,
and if they dont get their way they will side with Saddam Hussein against the US???
That doesn't sound like a friend to me. Sounds like a whining bunch of enemies to our south. They had better get on board with us or they will NEVER see any cooperation from us on anything in the future. Chew on them tacos, Vincente.

So why not vote in favor of the US, a vote that may help Mexico down the line on other issues in which it is interested?

"His comments came after a plea by the U.S. ambassador for Mexico to prove its friendship to the United States, the recipient of almost 90 percent of Mexico's exports." These folks in charge down in the south part of the United States (Mexico by another name), sure must be principled to the point that they would be willing to risk worsening relations with a trading partner that accounts for 90% of their exports. Either that or they are quite certain that the idiots to the north will never take action that would put them in jeopardy.
Not looking for a flame war with anyone, but I wonder how far GW will go to pander to the Tex/Mexicalli voter?

I wonder if they realize it's in the US's best interests to boot them all out if they arent legal?

I would also point out that I lived till recently in a town where several hundred people were fired or forced to quit from Tysons, so they could be replaced by illegal immigrants, some (supposedly) as young as nine. Those illegals "working their asses off" might be doing so at a job from which an American citizen was let go.

...that every person I'ver ever personally saw that I suspected was an illegal alien was working his ass off on a job I sure as hell wouldn't want.Maybe other Americans DO want those jobs. But they can't get them because the companies that hire these illegal aliens have undercut American workers by paying the illegal aliens lower wages and little or no benefits. Also, illegal alien workers tend to keep their mouths shut and work reasonably hard because they know that their employer can report them to the INS at any time.
