Sorry, MeeknMing, I had a brain fart earlier. It's tularemia (caused by Francisella tularensi ) that is the rabbit version of the bubonic plague (caused by Yersinia pestis), though both are endemic to the U.S. and a few people every year get either disease. My friend who works on tularemia told me that his boss and another were talking about the Texas case and said they thought the FBI was just trying to hit this guy as hard as they could to make an example out of him and to scare people in academic research.

How incredibly irresponsible to put this material into checked luggage. It was out of his control; could have been lost and opened by others. Unbelievable.
