Probably the best commentary I've ever read about that war.

I plan on seeing this movie immediately this afternoon. Gettysburg was great. And, yes, Martin Sheet was superb as General Lee. Jeff Daniels deserved at least an Oscar nomination. I imagine Duvall will do as well as Lee in this sequel. Anybody who passed on Gettysburg because of leftists in the film missed one great picture. I hope 'Gods' is just as good as Gettysburg.

What a wonderul article on God's and Generals - That is one of the reasons I do Civl War Reenacting - to relive history and to lear the actual events from history.
On a side not - Gettysburg should be awesome this year.

Men "Go" to war for as many reasons as there are men..
They "Stay", imo for their friends

I had a co-worker gleefully tell me that the reviews coming in for this were bad. I suspect that they are reviews by libs based on things in the movie that don't fit their template about the Civil War or the South.
Can any of you confirm that view? Provide supporting text/links?

Yes, "Gettysburg" was great. It could have been a masterpiece with just a little editing---the Lee adoration scenes were ridiculously long, for example. But Daniels was fantastic (again, the makeup was a little suspect).
After I saw the movie, I visited the battlefield. Appreciating the movements and strategy, I think, is only possible after you've seen the movie, because forests and roads cover much of the historic battlefield that obscure the brilliant decisions made, for example, by the Union cavalry general who held the road for most of the morning. I plan to see "Gods and Generals" tonight.

I have been eagerly awaiting this film for over a year. Robert Duvall is, hands down, my favorite actor. I must, however, disagree with your perception of Martin Sheen's portrayal of General Robert E. Lee in "Gettysburg."
The soldiers who followed General Lee, did so with the greatest reverence and respect. It is said that he inspired such loyalty that his men would have followed him anywhere. The hang-dog, tottering character portrayed by Sheen could never have inspired such dedication. Men would not have charged into the face of death under the leadership of such an insecure, wavering old man.
I suspect that Robert Duvall will bring some much-needed fire and spunk to this role.
I have toured the Gettysburg battlefield with a hired guide who provided background for what we were viewing. He was well worth the price and brought the bloody struggle that occured there to vivid life. I suspect this film will do the same, and plan on going today and taking a grandson.

Gettysburg should be awesome this year.<P.
Are they doing a major re-enactment up there this year?

The ironic thing is that is was produced by Ted Turner Pictures. Knowing that, this review shocked me, as I expected the movie to be a PC farce of the true story, and if this review is correct, that isn't the case.

A special edition soundtrack cd is available, with a dvd included. The dvd has outtakes of the movie, 2 music videos and the theater trailer.

Here's all the reviews you could want:
Gods & Generals ReviewsSo far, 5 out of 45 positive reviews, 40 out of 45 negative, The average rating 4/10. Even the positive reviews are lukewarm. Doesn't mean it won't be great.
