Oh pooh on all of them.
There is only one greatest movie ever made and that is Casablanca. It had everything.
Sure, there are lots of comedies that make you laugh your tushie off, but that does not make for a "great" movie.
Second on the list has got to be "A Man For All Seasons". Awesome, it exhudes integrity of the human spirit. It is a great antitode for seeing Clinton (either one) on the tube. Every time I see a Clinton on the screen I have to watch AMFAS to feel clean again. Greatest line is "But Richard, it profits a man nothing to give up his soul for the whole world. ... But for Wales??" Check it out. You won't be disappointed.
Then there is "The Browning Version" (the original 1951 British production, NOT the 1994 remake).
Can't leave "Zulu" off the list.
Apollo 13 (even though it has Tom Hanks) - hard to feel down after watching it.
Das Boot, of course.
All those Fred Astair and Ginger Rodgers flicks.
Can't leave "Spartacus" off the list. The interplay between the Gracchus (Charles Laughton) and Batiatus (Peter Ustinoff) is brilliant.

No, no, no, no, no... though it makes the top 5.

BEST of all time::: SOUND OF MUSIC ... with runner up to Gone With the Wind. (I can't believe it took over 200 posts before anyone thought of it.)

Best War (my opinion: several other good 'uns) ::: THE LONGEST DAY.

Tough to pick the one to finish the top 5, as it would be to limit to exactly 10 or 20,. etc... but If pressed I would say "It's a Wonderful Life", and be upset at leaving out so many others.
