If you look at Japanese mangia, it seems that the girls in the more pornographically oriented stuff always have schoolgirl uniforms on. That's *manga,* but in keeping with the point of the posted article, maybe the italian spelling is a bit appropriate.
But note that the manga comics come oriented toward very specific and very defined markets, with those from the Kodansha, Shueisha, Shogakukan and Hakusensha publishing houses in particular being primarily directed at preteen and young teen girl audiences. Too, costume play, whether as nurse, airline stewardess, maid or ,oh yes! schoolgirl uniforms is fairly common in Japan, but hardly limited to that culture and society- see Britney Spears' *One more time* video, or about any performance by the Russian girl duo t.a.T.y., for instance.
But if you're interested, the outfits go for about $200 in the USA....

They also have "tub girl" in Japan. That nation is seriously f'ed up when it comes to sex.

In other words, this came from the Japanese equivilent of "The Globe". I wonder if this story left room on the front page for the obligatory "Elvis and the Aliens" story?

In other words, this came from the Japanese equivalent of "The Globe". Well, no. The Mainichi Daily News is a serious and respected newspaper. But on Sunday a collection of the odder and usually prurient stories are gathered, often reporting details calculated to bring a blush to staid readers, or a giggle to schoolgirls.
Perhaps a better comparison would be with the *Page Three* topless pinup girls who grace some of Britain's print offerings. Though not as blatent, the stories related by in the WaiWai compilations are likely to explain or describe trends that an observer might well have himself noted, but not personally understood or appreciated. In that sense, it can almost be thought of in the sense of an epicurian guide.
Mainichi Daily News WaiWai story *here*. See the left and right sidebar links for additional WaiWai stories- some related, some not.
An additional bound collection of such stories is available and described *here* and that may give you a further better understanding of the WaiWai article compilations.

The fantasy never matches the reality. It can take a few metaphorical skillets upside the head to finally get this point across, but you are exactly right.

The Japanese do have fairly disfunctional relationships between men and women. It was pretty sad not only watching men and women interact while I lived in Japan but the disfunctional way that many relationships are portrayed in their media. When one of the most popular romantic manga genres is gay male romances (I couldn't believe the sheer number of women producing fan manga in this genre at Comiket), something just isn't right with the place. As one American co-worker once responde when I told her that Japanese men would lover her high pitched voice, "Japanese men are pretty insecure, then."

Bullshit article.
Speaks maybe 1-3% of Japan. Datelined from the most disgusting unrepresentative cesspot of all Japan: Shibuya.
Tabloid.
Crap.
Akin to posting an article 'about America' from a crack whore alley in Bronx and then calling the observations there representative of 'all the American teenagers.'

Our robes aren't spotless, too, you know. We are right up there with Japan as a country murdering millions of babies in the womb annually, and drugs all over the place. We have no right to criticize.
