Sorry to stray a bit, but...

On which issues does one need to "maintain a status-quo" in order to be considered Conservative (as a label for "Republican")?

Are people using liberal as a synonym for Democrat?

Couldn't one be libral about an issue and still be a Republican?

Any serious light shed on these questions will be helpful.

I'm not being flippant when I say one can be liberal on most issues and remain a Republican. Indeed; more & more it is becoming a qualifier.

Barry Goldwater described himself as a "19th century liberal". Historically, liberalism is concerned with individual liberty. And that is what conservatism is all about today.

Today, it is liberals (or "progressives", as they prefer to call themselves) who are defenders of the status quo.

Conservativism has never been about the status quo -- except as defined by the Constitution.

Interesting question.

Conservatives are the ones with new ideas. There's been a juxtaposition such that many who were once thinking liberals are still thinking and have determined that what is considered "conservative" today, isn't stuck in the past, or old., but actually quite liberal. As I used to know it, anyway. Does that make any sense to you?

To confirm the thought, look at the liberal resistance to try anything new. Soc. security. Peace protests in light of an attack on US soil. Racism on the part of liberals.

You mean like Arlen Specter?
