During the mini-filibuster on the Estrada nomination last week, Senator Durban (Illinois) had the gall to compare Senator Byrd's (West Virginia) ramblings to the warnings of Winston Churchill on the floor of Commons about the German menace. Durban had it dead wrong, of course. Byrd was playing the Chamberlain role of fear and appeasement, rather than the Churchill one of truth and commitment. I resolved on hearing that to make it the heart of mycolumn this week. Your post of Churchill quotes only confirmed the wisdom of that choice. The new column's title is "Buncombe Rides Again, and Again."

While I imagine you have read it in the past, here is a pre-war speech of Churchill dealing with appeasment. The issue was letting the years go by not dealing with defense, but the words apply to all appeasment. Might be helpful in citing a real Churchill warning...its one of my favorites.
