ALERT! FBI looking for truck that passed through Colorado!

DENVER - Concern among members of the FBI’s Joint Terrorist Task Force has surfaced in Colorado. A semi-truck driving through the state on Thursday afternoon apparently triggered a nationwide alert going out to law enforcement agencies across the state Friday night.

Only a few specifics of the alert were released. Apparently, it stems from what happened at a Sinclair gas station in Byers around 1:30 p.m. Thursday. Byers is about 40 miles east of Denver on I-70.

Two men described as Middle Eastern in an 18-wheeler with a white tractor truck apparently tried to put unleaded gasoline into the truck. An attendant advised them it would not work and told them they needed to use diesel.

The men fueled up with the correct gas, paid in cash and left on Highway 36, which would connect them to I-80 in northeastern Colorado.

The truck has a Quebec, Canada, license plate number RS7-116. The name on the truck is Real Transport.

Authorities ran a check on the license plate and said it was clear, but it does not have a current registration.

The FBI sent out the alert shortly before 5 p.m. Friday. It advises law enforcement officers that if the semi is contacted to identify the occupants and determine if there is a current registration available.

If the FBI has any other reason to be worried about the semi, it's not saying.

There’s no confirmation that this is tied into any possible terrorism, but with the country on high alert, no one wants to take any chances.

Still concerned about the possibility trucks could be used for bombings, the FBI also has checked student records at a Colorado truck-driving school, classroom instructor Jack Atencio said. Agents visited the school in Henderson, just northeast of Denver, for a few hours last week, checking specific names, Atencio said. --
FoxNews.com (October 15, 2001)

A similar lack of press scrutiny has extended to specialty licenses too, such as the "hazardous material" (hazmat) permits the FBI now believes several dozen suspicious Middle Eastern immigrants sought through a Colorado truck-driving school. According to Time, the men paid cash, and did not use the school's job-placement services — an important aspect of the program's appeal. They also could speak no English, relying on a translator they brought along, yet somehow passed the state's hazmat written exam, which is given only in English. --

And even another article regarding the Colorado Truck Driving School:

THE DENVERCHANNEL.com: "FBI: ARABS DID NOT TRAIN AT COLORADO TRUCK SCHOOL" (ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Only five former students were found to be of Middle Eastern descent, and none of them were suspicious, officials said.

"They paid for their training with student loans. They do speak English, and we find nothing sinister in the training they received, or the subsequent employment they sought and fulfilled," FBI special agent Mark Mershon said.

Though this tip turned out to be false, FBI officials continued to urge residents to report anything suspicious.") (October 15, 2001)

(This was also posted in the other thread)...intercepts last week referenced a "package" that was now in place in the US and ready to be used. Is this what you mean about the operative? He is the "package"? Or did he just come here and give Jack and A$$ the keys to this big rig in which they are currently transporting the "package"?

I am SOOOO thrilled to be going to NYC in 3 hours.

Sorry I didn't see this before you had to leave; but being a freeper, I suspect you'll find some way to check in :)

IIRC, the LEOs believed the "package" intercepts referred to bombs for blowing up bridges and tunnels--which I would take to be conventional. (Why bury your radiation?) But they certainly could apply to dirty bombs or nuclear devices.

The impression that I got from the news blurbs about the manhunt for that operative was that the authorities suspected he was some kind of organizer/supervisor, probably delivering instructions to various cells.

But your post brings up a couple interesting possibilities. He could be a specialist sent to check out/maintain/arm a device. Or, as you mentioned, maybe he just brought the keys to the rig and took the drivers to where it was hidden. These two were hardly geniuses, so it would make sense that whoever procurred/supplied the device would want to maintain tight access to it, as well as very tight operational security. Very few people would know of its existence, and even fewer would know of its location.

I also suspect that these guys may have been given this assignment at the last minute. Not knowing about the diesel and possibly making a wrong turn, as somebody pointed out, suggests they were not part of a well rehearsed team.

I wouldn't let this spoil your trip to NY. We're all just speculating and connecting dots that may not connect at all in reality. And even if we find out that they do connect, we've got no idea where they are going. Contrary to what New Yorkers think, we have several important cities--few of which are likely to be protected as well as NYC.

This makes me chuckle... I thought the mohammedans were *good* at pumping gas?

From what I've heard from Freepers who work over there, they need a lot of American help to pump oil out of the ground, so needing American help to pump gas would be par for the course.

I have only a 12,000 Gross E-350 diesel and know next to nothing about the big rigs. Is it true that the semi tractors use some sort of high-pressure fueling system at truck stops that is incompatible with smaller vehicles? I guess they could use a regular green handle nozzle if the faster system were unavailable. Also, would an untrained person have any chance of driving a big rig (at least until they had to back up)? I imagine there are different classes of tractors and different types of transmissions. Thanks, I have wondered about these things for a while.

The diesel at the truck pumps comes out much faster because they have 75-150 gallon tanks on each side.

and it would take quite a while to fill up at the slow speeds some of these regular car pumps put out.
Gas pumps out much faster in English pumps, BTW.
Driving most semis involves double-clutching. Upshifting, you let the rpms drop about 400RPM and
then shift into the next gear.
Downshifting, you have to increase rpm by about 400 and then shift into the next lower gear.
Takes a little practice, but nothing much more difficult than learning to drive with a regular clutch.

Your#206)...........Interesting.

My guess would be that they are heading for Ft. Riley, in Kansas.

(movies)

Location is just west of Manhattan, Kansas.

(movies)

They may be in a railroad yard.....hiding out.

(I think these foreign folk my have gotten 'ideas' from the movies.)

The name on the truck is Real Transport.

I'm in the trucking business and posted a notice about this truck to the our web group. Just received the following reply:

"re: The white tractor pulling the load, with the middle eastern men.
Was this tractor a Mack, was it a single rear axle tractor? If so, the tractor was stolen from Exxxxx Services, out of Quebec, the owners name is Pierre. If so, contact us at 386-xxx-xxxx, for the owner's phone number."

Could be Exxxxx owns Real Transport or the other way aound. There's a lot of gobbling up of smaller companies in this business.

I advised them to contact the FBI.

Sounds just like Al-Qaida's modus operandi.

You know Alice, it might be a good idea if you contact the FBI and give them the info just in case the other person hasn't contacted them yet.
