INS Registration Deadlines Extended for Thousands of Male Aliens
AP ^ | February 14, 2003

Deadlines for thousands of male visitors from seven mainly Muslim countries to register with U.S. immigration authorities were extended one month Friday by the Justice Department. About 15,000 males age 16 or older from Saudi Arabia and Pakistan will have until March 21 to be fingerprinted, photographed and show certain documents at local Immigration and Naturalization Service offices. The previous deadline was Feb. 21.

Another group of about 19,000 from Bangladesh, Indonesia, Egypt, Jordan and Kuwait will have from Feb. 24 to April 25 to register, four weeks beyond the original March 28 deadline.

The extensions come as a wave of protests has largely subsided over the program, which saw hundreds of men and boys detained when they showed up at INS offices to comply. Justice Department officials say there are 139 in custody, many of whom will be released on bond while their immigration cases are settled.

The registration program is part of a broader post-Sept. 11 effort by the INS to tighten security at U.S. borders and track down foreign visitors whose visas may have expired or who may be in the United States illegally. Seven suspected terrorists have been identified because of the program, along with 401 criminals or others who should not be permitted entry in the country, said Justice Department spokesman Jorge Martinez.

Hodan Hassan, spokeswoman for the Council on American-Islamic relations, said large-scale detentions of visitors from these countries have not occurred since December but that many Muslims still regard the program as discriminatory and ineffective in capturing terrorists.

"There's still a lot of confusion and uncertainty about who applies. It still stigmatizes the American Muslim community," she said.

All told, about 46,000 students, tourists, business people and visiting relatives from 25 countries are being required to register if they expect to stay in the United States for an extended period. Other countries will be added in the future.

The requirements do not apply to U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, people seeking asylum or diplomats from the affected countries.

Deadlines have already passed for people from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Sudan, Syria - all considered by the United States to be state sponsors of terrorism - as well as those from Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Eritrea, Lebanon, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, Somalia, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

A grace period given to visitors from the 18 countries who missed an earlier deadline expired Feb. 7. Martinez said an additional 1,850 men and boys registered in that period, during which no penalties were assessed.

We are giving them extensions while we go to war in Iraq??? Oh, I forgot, that's American soldiers who will be dying while American civilians will be dying from terrorist attacks in the US. Kind of evens things out a bit. I think I've got the logic.

".....but that many Muslims still regard the program as discriminatory and ineffective in capturing terrorists."

Why can't they get it? The people who wish Americans grave harm are of one religion, of specific age-group, are dark-skinned, dark-haired, and of middle-eastern descent.

Because we were so reluctant to racially 'profile,' our law enforcement agencies did not respond when when terrorist types were showing up in our flight schools; and for the same reason, Atta and his cohorts sailed with ease through our airports.

It's a ridiculous notion to think we should sacrifice American live's to preserve Arab feelings.

Perhaps they should just go home.

Muslims still regard the program as discriminatory

We know the terrorist profile and should definitely look closely at those who fit the profile. Our immigration policy, at the moment, is a national suicide pact. Neither major political party wants to take the appropriate action to stop this country from self-destruction.

These nuts won't be happy until there are
Crescent Moons on St. Paul's and St. Peter's.
Aren't moons a part of occult trappings?
Why are we letting potential terrorists in?
This is nuts.

Well thank God for small favors!

Now when I hear about some increased border security, I'll be impressed.

I agree
Until pressure is brought to bear via a media barrage nothing will change
Maybe with the media in DC and NYC feeling threatened they may get the message but who knows with these idiots

Stock up on ammo and tell Tom Ridge to defend himself with duct tape. Sorry buds, but I'm not counting on the government to seriously defend America. Our politically correct bureaucrats want to appease Muslim terroist and they advise you to go buy duct tape. How about this orginial thought Mr. Ridge, secure the damn borders for real and quit letting in Islamic nuts from known terrorist states.

If they feel it is wrong let them sue.

Pubs, not Dems are in office, say what you mean
and mean what you say.
Sorry convert your religion to one of Peace
or convert to another of your choice.
I could care less but start ratting out radical
TERRORISTS, or GET OUT.
