Two detained at border; authorities test for explosives

Friday February 14, 2003

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario (AP) Two men with Pakistani passports were detained at the Canadian border Friday after leaving the United States with materials that were being tested for explosives, Canadian and U.S. authorities said.

Corp. Michele Paradis of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the two walked separately into Canada across the Rainbow Bridge from Niagara Falls, N.Y. They were being questioned by the Integrated Border Enforcement Team, which comprises Canadian and U.S. officials.

No charges had been filed by mid-afternoon, Paradis said.

``I know they have a detention and they've been doing testing of materials that may be ... bomb-making materials or capable of producing a bomb,'' said U.S. Customs Inspector Steve Loffredo.

A Hamilton, Ontario, television station, CHCH, reported border officials seized a bag containing materials including a white powder and wire cutters. The report could not immediately be confirmed.

The FBI and U.S. Customs officials referred all questions to Canadian authorities.

Here is the answer to post no. 8 "Wonder where they were coming from?" This is a snippet from the link in post no.4, article from Canada.com:

"NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. (CP) - Two men were detained by the RCMP at the Canada-U.S. border Friday after leaving the United States.

Police said the two men walked separately into Canada across the Rainbow Bridge from Niagara Falls, N.Y. Hamilton television station CHCH reported border officials seized a bag containing materials including a white powder and wire cutters. Officials did not identify the materials but acknowledged they were testing substances found with the men."

And from the original WCBS880 article starting out this thread is this snippet: "Two men with Pakistani passports"

So, I guess that about sums it up... for now.

UPDATE...

CANADA.com: "WHITE POWDER, TOOLS RAISE BORDER ALARM" (ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The incident began at 4 a.m. yesterday, when a man walked across the Rainbow Bridge from the United States and presented a Pakistani passport to Canadian border officials, sources familiar with the case told the National Post.

He was carrying one item of luggage -- a duffel bag -- which was thoroughly searched.

In it a Customs inspector found a few articles of clothing on the top. The bulk of the bag was taken up by a container with perhaps a half a pound of a white powder and tools described as being consistent with those used in bomb-making, including wire cutters and Casio digital watches, sources said.

Cheap digital watches are often used as an explosive detonator. When Ahmed Ressam, a member of a cell linked to Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, was arrested trying to cross the Canada-U.S. border in 1999, he carried explosives and Casio watches he planned to use as detonators.

"When you see powder and wire cutters and watches you get alarmed," a Customs source said.

The inspection room was sealed and the RCMP alerted.

The second man walked across the bridge about four hours later and also presented Canadian officials with a Pakistani passport.

Both men said they were seamen who entered the U.S. illegally about a year ago after jumping ship. The similarity of the second man's story to that of the man with the suspicious materials caused alarm, sources said.

In the second man's possession were a number of medical documents, suggesting he had been treated for tuberculosis in Europe, according to one of the sources.") (February 15, 2003)

thanks for posting the other article, get a load of post 13 here... "was treated for TB in europe"

I am just waiting for some of these rat bastards here in my neighborhood (read: terrorist training camp) to start something, or react to something that got started somewhere else.

I'm quite sure some of these guys in my neighborhood are here on Student Visas of some sort. I doubt highly they are American-born, or even naturalized citizens.

I get some weird looks carrying my various gun/ammo cases to and from my car when I go shooting. Maybe it's the "I LOVE GUNS" and "TERRORIST HUNTING PERMIT" stickers, but maybe the Arabs in my apartment complex know that I am armed and willing to deal with any situation that should present itself.

as Harpseal says: Stay Safe, Stay Armed !!!
