Shut down the U.S. Postal Service. Just shut it down, cold turkey. Give everyone a few months' notice, to give private enterprise time to gear up.

Does anyone use the Post Office for anything but Junk Mail and magazines? All my financial stuff And bill paying is electronic. If papers have to be sent or recieved, it is done by Fed Ex and UPS does all my packages. If publishers would just send my magazines UPS I could glue the mail slot closed and seal out the junk mail forever.

Let me give everyone a hint as to what really goes on in the USPS and my personal knowledge of this monopolistic wasteful spending federally protected buruacracy.

I was an operations supervisor for Emery Worldwide Airlines. Emery was at the tail-end of a 10 year contract with the USPS and had 2.5 years left on the contract. They dedicated planes to carry exclusively, Express and priority mail. We were the only dedicated airlines to do this and we had continously delivered at a 98% on time delivery rate which was unheard of in the industry.

Then late one night the USPS signed into an illegal deal with FED EX to carry their mail. Thsi was a 6 year 7 million dollar contract. Not only was Emery doind it cheaper and more efficiently but they were already setup to handle that type of operation. Furthermore any contract that is over $10,000.00 must be placed for competitive bid, so says the government when it deals with the USPS. Who else carried mail for the USPS? US Air, Continental, Delta, Kitty Hawk (Might I add shortly before this deal had signed into a multimillion dollar contract for a 2.5 year period that would have to be bought out).

What is the jist of this story? Here you go....Just prior to this deal 6 months earlier the USPS reported that they lost 4million dollars in the 4th quarter alone. They attributed this loss to a slowdown in shipping and fuel costs. This was 2000. With that said I know personally many many managers/supervisors working at the USPS that on Christmas received bonuses to the tune of 20-30-40 and some $50,000.00. Now what company do you know gives bonuses with those kinds of losses? To top it off they were projecting further losses in the upcomming 1st quarter of 2001. Tell me this; with all this said how does a company decide to buy many existing contracts worth MILLIONS and then immediately sign into an illegal non bidded deal but stating losing millions in the future? But still hand out bonuses? My company tried to halt the deal and it was apparent of the unfair practices taking place and the risk of thousands being unemployed. What did congress do? NADA ZILCH....It was also rumored that the postmaster general Mr. Henderson set to retire that year was guarunteed a multi-million dollar consulting job with Fed-Ex. What Union allows their fiercest competitor to place FED-EX boxes on Postal Offices? That would be like Ford carrying Chevy cars on their lots. So who pays for all of this wasteful spending? We the public. Prior to all of this how often did the stamp raise in price? Why should this matter? Because even though letters are the cheapest way to mail items and it is still cheap the government should not allow wasteful spending to take place on this monopolistic system in that no other company can mail postal items or deliver them. What do all of you think about this?
