The Dems stepped in it, big time. Hispanics have been calling in to Rush---he took four in a row, and said he could have taken 100 today---who are outraged over the Dems' treatment of Estrada.
Every one claimed to be either a Dem or a "former" Dem, with a couple of them virtually switching today. They ALL spoke highly of Bush. The idiot Dems have no idea how badly this is hurting them!!!

I told you, I agree that such programs are wrong and that they need to be eliminated. I agree on guest worker passes.

And we have already estalished that is wrong. Surely you aren't that dense. What we have not established is whether American teens will work at certain jobs. I'm convinced that the culture is such that they will not do certain work at almost any price.

Nope. Don't need to "check it out." My mom is an "Okie." I'm saying that in TODAY'S culture, find me the adults who will work for $3 an hour at these menial jobs. Especially find me the adult men.

Yah, yah, and I could give you a similar quotation in GERMAN LANGUAGE papers in 1914 about how they were going to take over the government by German immigration. Yes, legal immigration, but they had the same delusions.

is to get the Hispanic community to help by showing it's in THEIR interest to shut down this cross-border trade. That is where I think conservatism needs to focus.
You just got done posting that the borders couldn't be shut down

"How many are conservative to begin with?" Thanks Bob. You continue to make my point. Most. That is why we need to make these points. That is why we cannot ignore these arguments as you suggested.

They can't. Bob, do you have trouble reading? I said that we need to get Hispanics to help stopping the flow. That can be done. No, borders cannot be shut down. You really think they can? Ever hear of the McNamara Line?

High immigration isn't helping Mexico anyhow ---it's just making things worse, one-fourth of their workforce is already in the US and nothing was solved by that. Things just get worse and more unstable in both countries.

I think the black and Mexican/Phillipino/Hawaiian/Cuban, etc.....population are starting to figure the Dems out....they only want them as pawns.... Ummmm....How did we Cubans get on that list? We've been voting 80% Republican since Goldwater. :-)

"Even with no welfare, you would not stop people from coming in, because there are jobs that "Americans" won't do.What really galls me when I hear this "Garbage" is the people that espouse such views have no clue what Americans will or will not do. Never mind that they came to our country "Illegally", never mind that they have overburdened most if not all hospitals near the southeastern US, never mind that the small amount of taxes they pay (if they even pay)does not even put a dent in what it takes to care for them.
I have worked in many jobs in my life, and I have met many "Americans" that would gladly work for small wages just to work, but these people cannot find work now because of "Illegals". You or the people you associate with may not want to work for less then $10.00 an hour, but there are plenty of "Americans" that will.
My hope is that any businesses that hire illegals will eventually reap what they sow and end up broke and on unemployed line. And I can guarantee you I will do my best to see that happens. If you knowingly Hire illegals you are trash and un-American in my book.

The racist democrats claim that the incredible, magnificent Estrada (a true legal genius and ethical good guy) can never be allowed to be a Federal Appellate judge because he has never had such a position before.
By this argument it is obvious the democrats will never nominate a Hispanic, since Estrada would be the first and only.
Memo to democrats: wipe my Clinton!

You don't live in the southwest, do you? No, there are limitless crossing points. In Arizona, you can cross anywhere. You would need armies like we have never seen, on full time alert, to shut down a single state. Won't happen.
We should make the effort, on principle, just like we should have a "war on drugs" on principle. But in the end, both are dependent on the DEMAND side, not supply.
I think a guest-worker program would do a lot to end the demand side, especially if you kick in some favorable consideration toward citizenship at the end of x years working. That would a) increase the number of legal workers who have a stake in keeping out the illegals, and b) provide "fairness" to those who want some chance to become citizens.

the Hispanic community to help by showing it's in THEIR interest to shut down this cross-border trade. That was my point with bringing up Silvestre Reyes ---the Hispanics here already know that ----they don't like high unemployment and very high taxes and cost of living, but mostly it was the high crime rate that immediately began to drop when the border became mostly closed in the urban area. They put up fences and stationed border patrol cars every few feet apart and that actually was a very popular move in this region. No one on this side complains about border patrol.
Cesar Chavez himself fought against illegal and high immigration but people seem not to remember that. That's why I think the amnesty and illegal immigration issue could backfire on the Republicans ---I think many hispanics see that as a way Republicans are trying to lower wages and help big corporations.

Please explain how these adult men are surviing on $3 an hour
BTW I got back from eating out at a reasonably priced Italian restaurant ( $12.00 for veal Marsalla) All the bus boys waiters and waistresses and kitchen help were white . Same goes for a Sports bar we go to (for the food as I don't drink)
Our local trash collections are done by a mixture of blacka nd white workers
And when we hiked the National parks the help was almost all white college kids
Same goes for our vacations in New England hiking the mountains the motels were staffed by white women in the main
You need to come east before you make statements about all those jobs that won't be filled by Americans

You don't hang out with teenagers much, do you?
Try quizzing them about the jobs they will do.
As for not doing business with firms that use illegals, don't bother visiting California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, Colorado, or Ohio.
Many of the houses are built with illegal labor; 90% of the maids I see working in the MANY hotels we go to are obviously illegals; most of the restaurant help; most of the gardeners. I think it would be pretty funny to watch people try NOT to patronize businesses that are using illegal labor. For example, how about Bally's gyms? Yep. Most of your vegetables and fruits involve illegal labor.

I don't know why you are spamming on this. Our discussion has nothing to do with helping Mexico. I don't care if we help Mexico or not.

Now you are being deliberately obtuse. I'll make one more attempt at this, then I'm through with you. You must change the culture in which people view illegal immigration. Right now, most Hispanic U.S. citizens don't necessarily see it as harmful to THEM. We must make clear that they are affected directly by burdens on the ed and med systems, and NOT, as many on this thread keep proving, simply want to keep out "lazy brown people." If we do that, they will help enforce by a) not encouraging; b) reporting (just like any other person whose tax money was being pilfered) and c) voting.

I didn't say help Mexico ---but our policies make things worse there which makes for even more immigration here. Mexico should help itself and if borders were closed it might just begin to do that.
