Are You Listening to This? Hispanics On Edge of Revolt Over Estrada!
Rush Limbaugh ^ | 2/13/03 | LS

Posted on 02/13/2003 12:03:45 PM PST by LS

The Dems stepped in it, big time. Hispanics have been calling in to Rush---he took four in a row, and said he could have taken 100 today---who are outraged over the Dems' treatment of Estrada.

Every one claimed to be either a Dem or a "former" Dem, with a couple of them virtually switching today. They ALL spoke highly of Bush. The idiot Dems have no idea how badly this is hurting them!!!

Actually I've been in the GOP since I was first able to vote, 22 years ago. Many of my cousins, 3rd generation Americans of Mexican descent, are too.

I think this the final straw in bringing the rest of the familia on board.

Thanks Chuckles. Keep up the good work!

The right can appeal to Hispanics without letting illegal aliens overrun this country. We are seeing that today.

And I totally disagree with that last statement. Bush has staked his CAREER on the fact that the voters are ALWAYS smarter than the Dems. And despite your apparent hostility to Hispanics, there IS a certain element of family values associated with the "amnesty" issue. I don't agree with Bush's position, but you are a fool if you disregard what THEY view as a legitimate concern.

I don't deny that the GOP is squishy on immigration, especially Mexican immigration. My concern is that FAR too many wild-eyed anti-Hispanos think they are somehow going to stop all peole of color from entering the country. Don't kid yourself: there is a HUGE neo-confederate "white is right" contingent that views all races except white as inferior. Most of them in this forum cloak their words very carefully, but I think an objective person can discern intent.

The job of the GOP is to simultaneously weed out THESE people while on the other end changing the terms of the debate to manageable, LEGAL immigration. And there is no one better able to pull this off than Bush. Certainly someone like Buchanan wouldn't begin to even start a dialogue before being laughed off the national stage.

Obviously you hate Rush, that's no reason to argue against his ideas on this.

Obviously you think you can read minds

And who are you to tell me I have no right to think Rush is wrong on this.

There was an amnesty under Reagan. It was called Simpson-Mazolli and it was adopted because it promised to end all illegal immigration by absolutely prohibiting the hiring of illegals in the future, ever. Why do we need an amnesty now? Simply enforce Simpson Mazolli and refuse to hire illegals. Then kick them out when they show up at the welfare office.

Anything wrong with that?

Did any Republican Senator call Hillary a liar yet?

With regard to her assertion that Estrada is the 1st to be considered for such a position, without prior judicial experience.

Opposing Fact: Ruth Bader-Ginsberg, in the Carter years!

"Simply refuse to hire illegals". Sounds good. Try it. My father owned a ranch in Arizona. I can tell you, you would have ZERO produce on your table without migran workers (most of whom are probably illegals).

You might say, "Americans would to the work." Right. At $25 an hour, at which point your tomato would cost $7 like it does in Japan.

The reality of life in much of the west is that MOST of the menial labor jobs are done by immigrants, especially illegals. I'd bet that 90% of the restaurant help is illegal, probably 50% of the hotel help, and perhaps the same percentage of gardening landscaping and construction help. I'm not talking unionized bricklayers, but DRY WALL hangers. No matter how you frame it, most Americans will not do that work, and certainly not for $3 an hour (or less, sometimes).

The flip side is, how do you plan to enforce it? Do you really want to jail all (otherwise) legitimate businessmen who, due to the economics, have to hire these people? George Gilder said of Napster, when one person steals your product, you have a theft problem. When a million steal it, you have a marketing problem. When one guy breaks the law, it is a legal issue. When they all do, it is an economic issue, and labor finds a way to a source, no matter what roadblocks you put in place.

There is an alternative. It's called Sweden, where unemployment is about 20% and where no one works more than 20 hours a week because they can't afford to.

I disagree, and the callers to Rush pretty much proved the point. But it is NOT, as you imply, "buying off" Hispanics so much as WEENING them from a party they had no business joining in the FIRST PLACE. Same with MANY (obviously not all) blacks and many Asians. Their natural inclinations are conservative---they don't like high taxes; they believe in our armed forces; they don't want to subsidize sloth; they don't like drugs. But until recently, Republicans have given them no reasons to abandon the Dems.

We need to use this, and other cases, as examples of why the Dems cannot be TRUSTED on issues JUST BECAUSE of race. That was the point Rush made, and the one that the callers responded to.

Right, that's the old canard about lazy, expensive Americans who can't pick up their own lettuce or tie their own shoes. Meanwhile, our teenagers, who used to be able to make a buck at a car wash or a gas station are wasting themselves doing drugs because the employers can't have enough of those cheap illegals.

I watch both stations and listen to the radio to help learn spanish for school. Also, many of my Mexican and El salvadorean friends (legal and illegal) rather republicans than democrats. As far I can tell, the coverage is way more balanced than in regular press. Most hispanics are impressed with Estrada.

Thanks for correcting me. I thought for sure she was Japanese-American---perhaps I subconsciously was thinking "Ling." So my original point still somewhat stands though?

If that is true then why did they stay with the party of subsidized sloth-high taxes-and anti military the democrats
But you are right about the military
My nephew is a major in the combat engineers and he told me he would take command of an all Hispanic unit with no resevations what so ever. He said they make excellent soldiers and were completely dependable and squared away with a lot of personal pride

Max, I don't think that the GOP is "playing the race card" in the same way the Dems are. I think the GOP is USING it to show Dem HYPOCRISY. That is going to be the crowbar with which we pry away black, hispanic, and asian votes, I'm convinced. And there is evidence that slowly but surely they are "getting it." Just read in Bill Sammon's book about people like the black school teacher who met W on 9/11 and who was a lifelong Dem . . . until then. I know, he can't meet every person, but we ALL need to be that "approachable" to potential allies.

I am the first to say race should not matter in anything. But I also think it useful, from time to time, to demonstrate the Dems hypocrisy on race. After all, at some point you do have to point things out to some people of all races. Everyone doesn't get the subtleties immediately---that's why I have review in my classes, for example. So if all Hatch and the others are doing is yanking the serapes off the Dems, I say, more power to them.

Gotta admit, I had a good one there on the Pennsylvania Germans, didn't I?

First, as someone corrected me, Lingle is not Asian, but her Lt. Gov. is. Second, as I understand her positions, she is reasonably conservative. Will no one to the left of Buchanan do?

I'm not defending illegals, so you have no case here. (BTW, in case you missed it, illegals pay taxes too! I was born in AZ, and I know that the illegal workers on the farms paid ARIZONA SALES TAX!) Furthermore, you are making my case that the view of hispanics by many freepers is that of welfare cheats and wetbacks. We have a LOT of work to do if the GOP is ever going to get over people like you.

You might tell Louis Matta, who fought in Korea and started a thriving restaurant in Mesa, with additional restaurants in Show Low and Chandler, about how he is on "fedgov" assistance.

Tomatoes aren't all that cheap to pick when the taxpayers have to provide free medical care and education costs of $6000 to $7000 per year per child ---educations costs alone often amounts to $35000 a year. For that an American would pick tomatoes.

I think the GOP is USING it to show Dem HYPOCRISY. re is

Sort of but you have to admit the democrats are equal oppertunity smearers when it comes to conservatives--white--black--Hispanic-- they all get BORKED .So they are consistent there

This issue for the GOP should be Conservative /qualified PERIOD
Etnicity should not even be mentioned
If Hispanic voters want to take notice that is up to them

But playing the race card by the GOP gives credance to quotas etc etc
