I am beginning to think Pres Bush did just that -- put forth Estrada first because he knew Pickering and Owens were going to draw their ire but why not do a Hispanic first.
From what I heard today on Rush and from others, Hispanics are up in arms at the DemocRATs and some have reregistered.

Rank and file Hispanics couldn't care less. This is a loosing issue for us. Bush Sr. got NO bump in black votes from Clarence Thomas being nominated.
We're over playing our hand.

I think this was planned as well - to use as a wedge issue against the RATs. They might mobilize their Lib base with a filibuster, but they'll see some erosion in the Hispanic vote. If GWB can get a few more votes from Hispanics the next time around, he'll be tough to beat.
