Hillary says she's against illegal immigration. She feels we all should have a (666) national ID card due to the war on terror. (Thanks, Bill!)

I saw it too...can someone explain what this is supposed to mean and how it would be done???
Were there any details given?
Being from NY, this is especially urgent.
Seems odd that now no one is saying anything about it on tv.

I missed the story. Is there a credible threat, or is this just one of several types of WMD attacks that NYC is preparing for?

Just talked to a relative who is a doctor in TN. He has colleagues in NY. He said that NY hospitals got some pretty specific warnings about bad guys using potassium cyanide.

They are really worried, and are gearing up as best they can to deal with the possibility.

I wonder why cyanide. Where'd they get the info? I wish Fox would elaborate, or let us know if it's just a precaution. Sheeeesh!
Maybe that's why the plastic and duct tape suggestion.

Borders, cyanide, and terrorism

Unidentified bandits stole 10 tons of sodium cyanide briquettes earlier this month during a roadside robbery in Mexico. The lethal chemical, combined with sulfuric acid, is used in gas chamber executions; a single whiff can kill in minutes. The hijacked truck was found May 16 with some of the storage containers still intact. But between 70 and 80 drums, each weighing about 220 pounds, are still missing.

State Department official Francis Taylor said he was "concerned about it ending up in terrorist- or criminal- or people-that-don't-know-what-they-have hands." So should we all be. Assurances from American embassy officials that Mexican authorities are "taking the lead" to find and prevent the cyanide from leaving the country are hardly comforting.

This is a government, after all, that encourages millions of its citizens to break our laws and violate our borders every day. And whose idea of border security is for us to build water stations and light towers for the comfort and convenience of their nation's smugglers bringing people and goods into our country illegally.

The Dallas Morning News points out that "there is no evidence that the material might be headed for the United States or even that the hijackers knew what they were stealing." Well, there's no evidence to the contrary, either. There is plenty of evidence, however, that this deadly poison is in high demand by Osama bin Laden's operatives all over the world who want to kill Americans. They want to send it through our air vents, smear it on our doorknobs and dump it in our water supplies.

Ramzi Yousef, one of the convicted 1993 World Trade Center masterminds, told federal agents that he would have used sodium cyanide if he had the money because he wanted to create a deadly gas cloud that would rise into the office towers and kill everyone. Ahmed Ressam, the al Qaeda terrorist convicted in the Los Angeles International Airport millennium bombing plot, testified recently that he had been trained in an Afghanistan camp on how to kill people with cyanide. Here's a partial transcript from his testimony last summer against a fellow conspirator:

Question: "You practiced these techniques on the dogs so that later on in one of your operations you would be able to perform such techniques on human beings, is that correct?"

Ressam: "Yes. We wanted to know what is the effect of the gas, yes."

Question: "Some of your potential targets while you were in the camp were American citizens, is that correct?"

Ressam: "In regard to targets in general, yes. Yes, we were speaking about America as an enemy of Islam."

Question: "[O]ne of the examples was to put the cyanide right near the air intake of a building such as a government building, correct?"

Ressam: "Yes, that's right."

Question: "And the reason that you would put the cyanide, you were trained, near the air intake would be to kill the most amount of people without endangering yourself and without being detected, correct?"

Ressam: "Yes, that's how gas is used in killing."

Ressam also described how terrorist coaches instructed al Qaeda campers on how to mix cyanide and other toxic chemicals into an oily paste to smear on door handles so that those who touched them would be killed by toxins coursing through their blood. This method, Ressam confirmed, was to be used "against intelligence officers and other VIPs."

In France last March, European intelligence agents disrupted a plan by suspected al Qaeda terrorists to test a poison gas weapon reportedly made with hydrogen cyanide. In Italy, two different groups with links to al Qaeda were arrested earlier this year in possession of cyanide compounds. One of the groups had maps of underground tunnels, where holes had been dug, and a water main leading to the American Embassy in Rome.

America is under attack. Eight to nine tons of cyanide are missing. And we are letting Mexico "take the lead" in finding the shipment and preventing it from making its way across our borders and into our water and lungs?

Be afraid.

"Safety (MSDS) data for potassium cyanide

Stability: Stable. Incompatible with a variety of materials, including acids, iodine, peroxides, permanganates, alkaloids, chloral hydrate, metallic salts. Light and moisture sensitive. Contact with acid generates extremely toxic HCN gas.

Toxicology: Very toxic. May be fatal if inhaled, swallowed or absorbed through skin. Note low LD values below. Extremely destructive of mucous membranes. Causes burns.

Primary Routes of Entry: Inhalation, ski absorption, ingestion, skin or eye contact.

Symptoms of Overexposure: Skin -- Weakness, headache, confusion or nausea.

Inhalation: Slow gaspoing respiration, thyroid and blood changes.

Eyes: Irritated eyes and skin, asphyxia.

Ingestion: Vomiting, increased respiratory rate.

First Aid Procedures:

Skin: Wash with sop immediately, remove contaminated clothing.

Eyes: Irrigate immediately.

Inhalation: Remove to fresh air, oxygen support as needed.

Ingestion: Medical attention immediately.

Stability: Stable

Incompatibility: Acids

Hazardous Decomposition: When mixed with acid hydrogen cyanide gas is formed.

Do not allow cyanides to drain into sewers or drains. If dry, keep it so to avoid difficulties in clean up. Avoid mixing with acids, lethal hydrogen cyanide gas will be created. Always have a cyanide antidote kit available."

Never heard of a cyanide antidote kit before.

What next...

Bet ya they're thinking these terrorists will be pumping it into their subway. It would be impossible for them to guard this underground system. It's an easy target just as the Lincoln and Holland tunnel. These guys are nuts and willing to give their life to kill as many of the "infidele" as possible.

Ok, I do not know what the rules are for posting links to other websites, but there is some info about potential cyanide attack on this Fox page:

http://foxnews.com/story/0,2933,78426,00.html</a href>

This part is directly from the article:

"In New York, hospitals were placed on high alert based on government intelligence of a potential threat, naming cyanide as the specific terror agent.

NYU Medical Center's Chief Medical Officer Eric Rackow wrote in a staff memo Wednesday that the hospital was taking all necessary precautions.

"NYU is working to ensure that we have adequate levels of the proper antidotes and pharmaceutical agents to treat patients should they be exposed to cyanide," Rackow wrote.

The weekly FBI bulletin circulated to 17,000 law enforcement agencies urged police to be extra vigilant for possible chemical, biological and radiological attacks. The bulletin asked local officials to consult a CIA handbook on how to respond to dangerous substances should such an attack occur."

It seems like every night I come on here, freak myself out, and then go to sleep and wonder why I have nightmares!

Florida Plant Reported Used to Export Cyanide 09/18/1990

------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -

DALLAS (AP) The Iraqi architect of a Libyan chemical weapons complex invested $5 million in a Florida cherry flavoring plant in an apparent bid to export cyanide to the Middle East, a newspaper reported in Sunday's editions.

Two former associates said deceased financier Dr. Ihsan Barbouti used the Boca Raton plant to establish a front through which he could export deadly hydrogen cyanide and the technology to produce it in quantity, The Dallas Morning News reported.

The former associates said Barbouti sought to export the poison to Middle East countries identified by the U.S. government as supporters of terrorism. Barbouti acknowledged contracts with Iraq and Iran, they said.

Barbouti has been identified in Western news reports as the architect of Libyan Col. Moammar Gadhafi's chemical weapons plant in Rabta. He died July 1 in London on lung and heart complications, according to his death certificate. He was 63.

A federal lawsuit filed in Oklahoma City in 1989 claims that Barbouti schemed to take over TK-7 Corp., an Oklahoma City fuel additive manufacturer, so he could have a licensed source of chemicals for diversion the Rabta plant. The 1 lawsuit, filed by TK-7 president Moshe Tal, is still pending.

The president of the Florida flavoring plant said he had no role in the diversion of any toxic material, but acknowledged that at least 150 gallons of a cyanide compound was unaccounted for. The cyanide was a byproduct of a process used to extract bitter almond oil, a concentrate for cherry flavoring, from apricot pits.

The cyanide could have been taken from Product Ingredient Technology Inc. without his knowledge, Louis S. Champon said.

"My feeling is that it was his intention to ship out (cyanide) to overseas," Champon said.

Peter Kawaja, whose company installed a $1 million security system at the plant, said the cyanide was removed during "night trips" to another site in Florida he declined to identify.

"Shipments have left the U.S. and technology has left the U.S.," said Kawaja. "We're talking about the research and development of chemical weapons in the United States."

Kawaja declined to identify the final destination of the potentially lethal chemical.

The newspaper said U.S. Customs and the FBI have accelerated their investigation of Barbouti's role in the flavoring plant since Iraq's invasion of Kuwait last month. They are examining his vast holdings in Dallas, Houston, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Tennessee, New Jersey and New York.

The federal agencies declined comment.

"If there's an ongoing investigation, we're not going to comment on it. Those are attorney general's guidelines ... I'm not confirming that there is an investigation. I don't know if there is or there isn't," FBI spokesman Jeffrey W. Maynard told The Associated Press on Saturday.

The Central Intelligence Agency also refused to discuss the investigation.

"We decline to comment at this time. I would say, though, that if there is any indication or intelligence of hostile activities we would bring that to the attention of the appropriate law enforcement authorities," CIA spokesman Peter Earnest told the AP.

Customs Service spokesman Cliff Stallings in Miami said Saturday that he had been in Washington last week and was unaware of the case.

"You can quote me saying if it's under investigation, then we won't talk about it," he said.

Barbouti's holdings are 1 controlled by his son, Haidar Barbouti, who lives in New York City. The younger Barbouti has been president and director of 20 to 30 of his father's companies.

There was no answer at Barbouti's Manhattan residence or at the Barbouti holding company, IBI Industries Inc., Saturday.

Champon said he has filed a lawsuit to sever his business ties with the Barbouti family. Champon said he and Barbouti often quarreled about disposal of the waste cyanide and that Barbouti's funding "stopped when we flatly refused to send out any cyanide complex."

"Dr. Barbouti many, many times mentioned that he wanted this cyanide ... shipped to Germany," Champon said of the cyanide waste from the plant.

And according to Kawaja and Champon, the Barboutis asked the plant's architect to computerize the blueprints of the operation without Champon's knowledge.

"They were trying to steal the plans," Champon said.

NYCers should just remain calm and take a couple of Tylenol tablets.

On second thought...
