WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Americans have apparently heeded the U.S. government's advice to prepare for terror attacks, emptying hardware store shelves of duct tape.

On Tuesday, less than 24 hours after U.S. Fire Administrator David Paulison described a list of useful items, stores in the greater Washington, D.C. area reported a surge in sales of plastic sheeting, duct tape, and other emergency items.

I'd LOVE to hear how BULLET makers are having to go into overtime, and how GUN manufacturers are firing up new assembly lines because the American people are preparing to protect themselves against these murderous pricks.

Most folks who are of the mind to arm themselves, or just to get a few more guns and some more ammo, just in case, did so after 9-11. That market is pretty well saturated. Nothing says you can't do both though. A gun isn't much use after the fact, but could prevent an incident, as they have in civilian hands many times in Israel.

What's funny is that the Iraqis will turn the French away at the border stating, "we already know how to surrender".

Oh how I miss Red Green and his nephew. I got a roll of his duct tape and a tee shirt for a donation to the local PBS. They dropped him the next season and I haven't given a dime since...

In the fifties it was "Duck and Cover". Now it's "Duct tape and cover with plastic." Scary times, indeed.

Dang....I bought oranges.

I understand that oranges are used in the preparation of Peking Duck. Pardon me, Bejing Duck. I sense a pervasive conspiracy.

We must be close to red alert if we are almost running out of duct tape.

A wise man once said 'Civilization is held together by WD-40 and duct tape'

Y'all can yuck it up all you want, but what this tells me is that they are seriously worried about either a dirty bomb or a full fledged nuke. Sealing up your house would help in a gas attack also, I guess, provided the gas dissipates or the agent is washed away, before you run out of air in there. Filtering the air for fallout is not all that difficult, but to filter out chem war agents would be much more difficult.

Of course the best solution is to shoot the bastards before they can set off whatever it is they have, but there are lots of obstacles to that, including both target ID and certain governmental restrictions.
