Waiter killed for asking customer to share karaoke microphone
February 12 2003

A waiter was stabbed to death when he asked a drunken customer to share his songbook and microphone with other patrons at a karaoke bar in the Philippines, police said yesterday.

Police officer Marcelino Castillo said 20-year-old Froilan Gargantilla died late Sunday after he was stabbed several times by the suspect, Renato Guevarra.

"Another waiter of the bar was stabbed by the suspect but he was already out of danger," Castillo said.

Guevarra, who was drinking with a friend, allegedly became angered when Gargantilla asked him to share the bar's songbook and microphone with other customers.

Castillo said Guevarra and his friend were already arguing with other customers who were waiting for their turn to sing when the victim intervened.

Village security officials were able to arrest Guevarra as he fled the bar. The suspect was charged with homicide and detained in a police station.

Police were hunting down Guevarra's companion who eluded security officials.

In the end, I won't be surprised if it turns out that the waiter had asked the customer to put him out of his misery! Can you imagine the torture of listen to amateur interpretations of Wind Beneath My Wings, sung with Filipino/Spanish accent, day in day out?!

I'm collecting evidence that the 'Post' button eats words. I swear that when I pressed it earlier, the sentence fragment read:

"imagine the torture of having to listen"

(That's all right, I'll take out these frustrations on the nearest waiter later this evening.)

I was in a hotel bar in Hawaii 13 years ago and Imelda Marcos walked in and tried to sing with the band.

It can't be as bad as listening to old drunken Japanese men sing it.

I read somewhere that there have been thousands of karaoke killings in the past
half year alone.
