CHP has boats on most CA interior waterways. SF Bay goes a long way inland - past Redwood City. I know - used to have a boat at Redwood City.

Anything in the bay worth catching?

I do mean besides the guy in the Zodiac.

Hogwash, last time I had a Maine lobster, it was plastic tasting, and smelled like cheap tuna.

You're supposed to cook it alive, no matter how much the folks at PETA want you to bash it over the head first. Dang Kalifornia political correctness. Makes all the difference!

Dope.

Heh heh heh... Now I'm reminded of a song from deep in teh Maine Bogs - "She invited me for Lobster, and all I got was crabs..."

There's lobster down south, and there's abalone up north... but I think the only thing in SF bay is old tires and cement shoes.

I've been watching the local news from my hotel, and they're saying pretty much the same stuff. Some boat was seen milling about the bay bridge and they're looking for it and checking out the bridge. Nobody knows what it was about, they're just looking around. Reaction seems appropriate...

Nope. I didn't seeing any fishing / trapping / poaching references.

Maybe they just needed some tires?

I'm sure this is nothing, but still not the kind of news story I like to see in the morning... especially since my office is under the bay bridge...

Quite so. There are many of this sort of alert that will happen, and will turn out to be nothing.

Problem is: the one that turns out to be something real will look pretty much the same.

Ramius - what's going on down there?

Latest news (channel 2, fox affiliate) blurb summarized that a man was seen in a zodiac operating suspiciously (?) near the bay bridge, was almost hit by a tug boat. After a search of the area, the man and boat have not been found.

"Probably an illegal oriental with a load of fish and no fishing permit."

If his name is Li Cheng -- then OK. If his name is Johnny Jones -- another OK. But if his name is Hamit Mohammad -- then I'd check him out.

Profiling be d**ned!

MSNBC Reporting now that it was a guy in a Zodiac, and they missed him.... can't find him.

A boat or car?

When I lived in California we had a 68 Zodiac car and that was about the time the Zodiac Killer was in the Bay Area. Nobody believed us when we said our car was a Zodiac.

"...Anything in the bay worth catching?"

My brother has caught several sturgeon in the 100 pound range over the years in S.F. Bay.

They are the ugliest thing I've ever seen but the meat and Black Caviar are to die for!

I have probably never been in the same room as really good caviar, but the caviar I have tasted barely got to my lips. It smelled like the water in the bottom of a bait-box after a really hot summer day!

It's kind of hard to believe but only a few years ago there was a commercial cavier fishery in Okla.Spoonbill were used because of the lack of sturgeon in other areas.

One good roe laden female is worth BIG bucks and a number of men went to prison for taking spoonbill for the eggs from other states and without proper permits, etc.

There is just too much money to be made with sturgeon or spoonbill cavier for some folk to stay legal.

John, the poacher theory could easily hold water.Gill nets or snag lines placed under the surface would work for the fish and sturgeon roe is worth even more than spoonbill.

To keep line thieves from running my legal setlines,I often set them under the surface and free dive my lines so I don't have to drag them up and handle the weight.A poacher can do the same and keep things hidden but if he sees a warden coming just dump the fish in the water and a warden would have to have an idea to drag the right area for his lines.

I stay legal whatever I'm harvesting because I like to sleep well and when a warden pulls up at my house,I know it's for a friendly visit.:)

Is the search still on or did they call it off? One article said it "nearly collided" with a tug. Is the media saying it did or did not?
