Tubular. What, exactly, is "tubular" supposed to metaphorically conjure in one's brain, anyhow? I have never understood that word as used as an adjective. I mean, other than describing PVC pipe or something.

Surf term -- from the tube formed by a wave. Very very very old -- from the 70's I think.

I'm no west coast surfer expert (I'm in WI) but, I believe it stems fom the surfers who would describe the perfect wave as being just under the top of the wave as the wave starts to crash over them, thus creating a lip, curl, or tube ie: tubular.
