In the last two years at my primary job, I witnessed about 66% of long term staff forced out. This concern lost thousands of years worth of savey and competence, and never batted an eyelash. Been hanging around where my dad works? He's management and they've done it to him too. They can hire someone in at less than half his salary and way less vacation time. They've made the job so rotten and annoying that he's praying for the place to close down. As long as he can officially retire (he's 58), he'll be fine.

Good luck to him and your family. I would have loved to have set up a 401k when I was a kid. My job that I mentioned promised a retirement. Seventeen years later they took away that retirement. They froze it right where it was and threw me onto a 401k plan. Neither will amount to a hill of beans. My 401k was essentially destroyed in the last two years.
