Press Release:

Subject: Michigan Gun Owners formed
Issued: February 8, 2003

Gun Rights activists want grass roots organization in Michigan:

Leading gun rights activists in Michigan today announced a new initiative to put forth a return to grass roots activism and reverse the trend of draconian restrictions placed upon the law abiding gun owners of Michigan and restore the rights of its citizens as guaranteed by Article 1, Section 6 of Michigan’s Constitution and the Second Amendment of the US Constitution.

A non-profit organization called “Michigan Gun Owners” has been formed to build a voice for law-abiding Michigan citizens who are concerned about the constant erosion of their rights and are willing to work at the grass roots level to effect favorable public opinion and legislation.

Michigan Gun Owners mission statement:

Michigan gun owners is a not-for-profit, all volunteer organization committed to educating the public about trends and activities which diminish the right to keep and bear arms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights and Article 1, Section 6 of Michigan’s Constitution, and engaging in grass roots activism to preserve and defend those rights.

An executive committee has been established and is composed of 7 highly talented activists committed to organize an effective group of members state-wide, with a collective voice to be clearly heard by Michigan lawmakers. The first year management group is tasked with structuring the organization and establishing a policy for maximum possible effectiveness.

“The Executive Committee of Michigan Gun Owners has extensive experience and capability to capture the needs and interests of Michigan’s law abiding gun owners in this important mission.” said Executive Committee Chairman Robert Hauff. “I expect that we will develop a creative, innovative strategy and structure from which an effective gun rights reform campaign can be launched.”

The effort will begin with a membership drive across the state and by preparing for an organized campaign to educate the public about guns, gun owners, and Michigan’s gun laws.

Michigan Gun Owners will work with decision-makers in education, business, and government, other sportsman’s organizations, as well as everyday citizens, to better the lives and liberties of all Michigan’s citizens.

Dan, the Gun Show Protection Union, GSPU, is a tax exempt corporation, donations are not. We are not a charity organization. GSPU was organizied to fight gun control laws that effect all of us and Gun Shows. We have only one goal and that is to protect one of America's pastimes called GUN SHOWS! We will defend all gun shows and your right to attend them. More good American gun owners attend gun shows every weekend than the Super Bowl and a World Series game combined and we have no power! WHY?? Because we are not organized. We are approaching a thousand members but that is just the beginning. For information on the GSPU, write or email address to: GSPU, PO Box 741, Oxford, Ohio 45046 or Dickson@brecnet.com We need your grassroot support to win this war. The question is "do we have the will." I THINK WE DO!!! It sounds like you have changed your tune about your friend the NRA. Watch your back, they got us too!!

I'm not a fan of certain individuals in the NRA right now. A lot of it depends on who the state NRA guy is. I don't want to sell my org by bashing others, so I won't go into detail there.

I'll talk to Rob and a couple of others about GSPU. I can't promise anything.

Is Governor Grandstand actively violating her sworn oath to uphold the Michigan Constitution by working against Michigan gun rights in her new administration? I heard some stuff out at camp last weekend.

What did you hear at camp? I haven't heard anything in awhile.

A friend of mine(Independent - votes strictly guns) who is good friends with a couple of people in Granholm's admin, met her and discussed this issue. She was anti mainly because of the people she hung around. I think he expects status quo, and at best, Cherry(who really is pro-gun and seems like a good guy, especially for a Dem) will handle the gun issue.

I don't know what to expect from her. She picks Cherry largely because of the gun issue, but also one of her top allies goes after a dem in the primary partly because of the gun issue.

I think it largely depends on who Granholm listens to.

Are there any plans in Michigan to address the lack of non-resident CCW reciprocity? I live in California, where CCW cards are like hen's teeth, and while I have a Washington and Florida CCW, I can't use them in Michigan under the law because I'm not a resident of Washington or Florida.

It would seem that this flies in the face of the Michigan RKBA constitutional provision, and equal protection of the law - someone from Washington with a Washington CCW is fine and dandy, while someone from California with a Washington CCW faces a five-year felony.

I know reciprocity is being worked on now by our AG(who has all the power there), Mike Cox. I don't know about non-residents.

I remember a few years back that many Michiganders got a Florida CCW, and I believe either the courts or an AG opinion(Frank Kelly or Granholm, both Anti's) said that it wasn't allowed, and was used as an end-around Michigan's law at the time.

From what I know, I don't think there is a chance of this happening based on history. We can try, but I think it will be easier to repeal registration.
