I think it is infrared. Most common black and white video cameras pick up some in the infrared, and that would be a good thing when looking for re-entering and flying objects that would be warm. They would be highly visible due to temperature.

It is a "thermal" imagine in either case, as the craft/air envelope is glowing white hot.
