"Except in Fidel Castro's island prison and in the hermit Stalinist state of North Korea, it is widely acknowledged today that Communism is a spent force."

He left out Hollywood and the music industry, academia, union leadership, much of the news media, Democrat leadership, and most artists.

The savage wars in the former Yugoslavia were unleashed by Croatian president Franjo Tudjman's genocidal desire to forge an ethnically pure Great Croat (pardon the contradiction) empire stretching from the Danube River to the Adriatic Sea.

Ping.

Saudi mercenaries in Bosnia attacking Catholics and other enemies of communism in Croatia? More evidence of "the deal"? Fits the scenario. Wahabbis get Bosnia; commies get Croatia. The communist frontier moves northward to the borders of Serbia and Rumania, toward Czech Republic and Hungary.... another step toward Moscow; Montenegro and Albania slouch toward Sharia. Terror money flowing from ME; communist propaganda apparatus still in o'drive trying to trip U.S. and allied action against Saddam. Preservation of operational platforms for both factions, the goal. Whathca think?

Havel is a smart guy.

Good post.

BUMP

The savage wars in the former Yugoslavia were unleashed by Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic's genocidal desire to forge an ethnically pure Great Serb empire stretching from the Danube River to the Adriatic Sea.

Jeffrey T. Kuhner is an assistant national editor at the Washington Times. He is currently writing a book on the history of the Croat-Serb conflict in the former Yugoslavia.

I'll have to get to Jeffrey of the Washington Times, before he makes an 'ass' of himself using such an absurd statement in his 'book', and direct him to the Hague 'Tribunal' archives and proceedings where Milosevic is exposing NATO as the 'criminals'.

Dear Utah Girl,

I don`t know what was your intention when you posted this article? You didn`t give any comment on it.

But,I must tell you that this article is nothing but a pamphlet, writen by a Croatian American Diaspora(pro Fascist!)

It is full of lies, half truths and egzagerations!Mostly, about pre -1991 Croatian "history".

Girl,in "dark Tito`s age" there was no "hundreds of thousands "killed Croats,or persecution of Croats as a whole, quite uncontrary! The alleged "persecution" of Croats was finished in 1949 when a geoup of Ustashe war criminals were tried in Yugoslavia, and eather shot or sentenced to prison.Since then,Croatian communists held the highest position of power in Yugoslavia (Tito was a Croat)and Croatia fared much better than some other Yugo republics. The situation improved even more when Yugoslavia opened her borders in 1960 and almost a milion of Yugoslavs went to work abroad(75% Croats). The influx of hundreds of milions of Deutche Marks earned by those people abroad had increased a living standard of their families imensely.

Croat Catholic Church ,also, was free to practice at will, unlike some other Christian faiths which were under a tight control and, supressed.

Croatia had prospered under Tito`s regime and was the second most developed republic in Yugoslavia.

Secondly, the author claims that Mesich and Racan "will never forget Tudjman for braking up with Yugoslavia"!!!!!?????For God`s sake,Mesich had never been a communist,he was a major instrument of Tudjman`s destructive racist policies, publicly boasted that "he will be the last Yugoslav president"....He broke up with Tudjman in 1995-96,I believe, but not because he was "hearthbroken" over Yugoslavia! The same applies to Rachan, who was a communist before but actively supported Yugoslav desolution.

I can, also, see that our "expert" repeats propaganda lies about Miloshevich the "ultimate vilain",and,I can`t be bothered to comment on that.Find the truth for yourself.

The story about destruction of Catholic churches by Bosnian Muslims is egzagerated, despite the incident in which Croatian family was killed by a Muslim fanatic a couple weeks ago.The author conviniently, does not mention that 75% of Orthodox churches in Croatia were destroyed ...the same figure stands for the Orthodox churches and monasteries in Hercegovina.

I could write more but it would be a long essay in which, word for word, this peace of journalistich garbage, would be "anihilated"!

Sufice to say,the author blames "ex Communists" for Croatian economic throubles, but he fails to point out that Croatia was plundered by Tudjman family and their cronies!Oh,no Sir,we can`t attack "Father of the Nation",right?

Instead,he is trying to sell an old lie about "Croats, the bulwark and defender of Christianity"!Funny ,he doesn`t mention the real bulwark,a first line defence against Islam,Krajina Serbs!?No way!

And,finally,"Croatia is pivotal for the region"!Since when?According to whom?

Croatia is important,but not pivotal.

All in all,Utah Girl,if your intention was to show the ignorance and bias of the author, you`ve done a good job. But,If you think that he is right,than...we have a problem.

The problem is,that this idiot is writing a book, and I shiver when I think that Americans will read this inaccurate drivel and use the book as an source of information. That`s the problem.

With "experts "like these ,who needs morons!

Cheers!

Now,guys,fire at will!

The powers that be have made only tepid efforts at privatization — while doing nothing to scale back the bloated public bureaucracy that is stifling entrepreneurship and private investment. Moreover, they have also failed to clamp down on the economic culture of cronyism and corruption passed down from the Communist era. Bribery and payoffs to public officials remain a prominent fixture of business in Croatia. Rather than waging a war on corruption and providing an attractive climate for foreign investors, Racan's economic team has remained paralyzed.

Having looked to Belgrade for decades to bail out inefficient state-run companies, Zagreb's former Titoists have based their economic strategy on milking international aid out of Brussels and Washington. Yet contrary to their expectations, significant Western financial assistance has not materialized.

The country is now an economic basket case. The unemployment rate is over 23 percent — a significant increase since the anemic Tudjman years. Zagreb is also saddled with a nearly $10 billion foreign debt. Its annual per capita income is slightly more than $4,000 — half that of neighboring Slovenia and only 60 percent of what it was before Croatia became independent, in 1991. The government's dismal economic record — combined with its inability to defend the country's leading generals, such as Janko Bobetko and Ante Gotovina, from deeply flawed and weak indictments by the Balkans war-crimes tribunal — has led to a substantial loss of support among the electorate.

There you go;current government does not fight "corruption, cronyism ...passed down from Communist era"!!!!What happened with 1989-98 period when Tudjman was in control???Isn`t it true that Rachan and Mesich had inhereted his government apparatus???No,those years had desapeared,Croatia proved that Einstein was right, and achieved a time travel.Jumped from 1989 to 2003 in a Communist Time Machine!

And,what is this about Croats going to Belgrade to bail them out when they were in throuble? Why would those nasty Serbs that "dominated Yugoslavia" bail out their Nemesis,Croats???

And,new government shows no respect for "Croatian patriots...Gotovina and Bobetko"!?

This guy is so pro Tudjman and his Neo Fascist party that,I suspect,he received a "large donation" from Croatian Diaspora(Tudjman cronys and fascists) for his research.

Can`t wait to buy his book.

Interesting. My husband's cousin is a nuclear engineer in Zagreb (part of the minority Serb population). When we visited him a few years ago, he explained the social and political turmoil of his country. We'll have to contact him and see if things are worse.

Utah Girl, what is the point of this article?

I will just quote the end:

A stable and prosperous Croatia is vital to Western security interests because it is a pivotal front-line state in the war against global terrorism. For centuries, the Croats served as the ramparts of European Christendom, protecting Rome and Vienna from invading Ottoman armies

Now, that's a lot of do-do. Kuhner needs to go back to school and take History 101. Better he needs to look up the history of Yugoslavia.

Croatia is nothing. Croatia is a horeshoe, always has been and always will be, of someone else's horse. Since Starcevic, Croats have spent 24/365 hating Serbs. In fact, hating Serbs defines them! They adopted Serbian language in 1850 because their native tongue is too underdeveloped for serious prose, they can't claim nationality on religion, so what defines them? Simple: their hatred for Serbs. Serbs make their day.

For centuries the Habsburg masters of Croatia found precisely the Serbs to be the "ramparts of European Christendom, protecting Rome and Vienna from invading Ottoman armies." They paid them to do so. They were priviledged for doing that. The Croats were serfs. The Habsburgs likened Croatian native language (which is not a form of Serbian they use today) to something children speak, and they certainly never trusted the Croats.

Croats will never stop whining about the Serbs, except when they need them. Serbs never needed Croatians, so they don't whine about them. Serbs gave up more for Yugoslavia so Croatians and Slovenese could have their states they couldn't get on their own than anythign Croatians and Slovenes have done for Serbs.

Ping to my #108. You usually post good articles and info on FR and then take responsibility for and pay attention the threads you start. Somehow, you posted this article and started this thread, then ignored it. Maybe this one somehow slipped through the cracks you'd like to come back for comment?
