I believe Russert's assertion that George H. W. had 75% approval from the American public before the Persian Gulf war is a fabrication. I remember being very cautious about my support at the time, although I felt something had to be done about Saddam. I don't believe George had more than 60% in favor. Then, after the war was shown to be succeeding it probably went to 75% and up to 85%.

I don't remember it but have heard recently that Bush Sr's approval dropped to 39% before the war. I don't think people remember there was a lot more worry about Iraq's capabilities back then.

In terms of all these quotes about what Russert thinks, who gives a rat's ass what he thinks??The current media is so weak it spends 80% of its time interviewing the reporters. Tim Russert is a smiley smacked ass. A measely 25% oppose the war and Russert goes on about Bush having more time to convince people. You would have 25% against a cure for cancer.

That's the way I remember it also. And I think it will work out the same way this time.

Doesn't fit with my recollection either. I think the support grew after the invasion.
